Gryphon Audio Mephisto Stereo and Wilson Audio Sasha DAW!

Wilson Audio Sasha DAW floorstanders driven by the Gryphon Mephisto Stereo form the core of this ten-component chain, a two-module American loudspeaker on a Danish dual-mono amplifier that runs entirely in class A. CH Precision supplies the L1 line stage and the P1 phono stage, vinyl plays on an Air Force III Premium S from TechDAS with a Kuzma 4Point arm and an Air Tight Opus-1, and files play from an Aurender N30SA transport into a LampizatOr Golden Gate 2 DAC.

The system at a glance

Ten boxes cover two sources, separate pre and power amplification, one pair of speakers and a Shunyata Research Hydra Triton power distributor. The Sasha DAW lists at USD 37,900 per pair and the Mephisto at USD 57,000, so speakers and amplifier alone come to USD 94,900. The weight sits on analogue playback, with streaming as a full second source.

Why these components work together

Wilson rates the Sasha DAW at 91 dB/W/m with a 4 ohm nominal impedance that falls to 2.48 ohm at 85 Hz, and asks for at least 25 W per channel. The Mephisto answers that load with 175 W into 8 ohm, 350 W into 4 ohm and 700 W into 2 ohm, a true doubling at each halving of impedance, from 40 bipolar output transistors fed by two Holmgren toroidal transformers. Its inputs are balanced XLR only, which suits the fully discrete, dual-monaural L1. At the front end the Opus-1 produces 0.45 mV from a 1.4 ohm coil, and the P1 has two current-sensing inputs with an input impedance under 100 milliohm, built for such low-impedance moving coils, plus gain up to +69 dB. The 4Point is an 11 inch arm on four sapphire or ruby bearing points and takes cartridges up to 35 g. The Air Force III Premium S floats a 29 kg gunmetal platter on an air bearing and holds the record flat by vacuum. On the digital side the N30SA uses OCXO clocking and a dedicated USB output, and the Golden Gate 2 decodes up to DSD512. The Hydra Triton feeds everything and is rated for 20 A continuous.

How it sounds

Since the amplifier keeps its grip at the lowest impedance point, the dip does not soften the bass, so kick drum and double bass keep their outline and the low end stays tight rather than swelling. Wilson's time alignment of the upper module puts voices and acoustic instruments in stable places across a wide stage, and orchestral climaxes stay unstrained.

Considering a similar setup

The decisive part is the amplifier. Whatever replaces the Mephisto must keep delivering current near 2 ohm, so a heavy class A or class AB design with a large supply matters more than headline power. The analogue chain scales down more easily, provided the phono stage keeps a current input or low loading for low-impedance coils.
