Shunyata Research is an American designer and manufacturer of power distributors, power cables and signal cables, founded in 1997 by Caelin Gabriel and based near Seattle, Washington. Its products go into home audio and video systems, recording and mastering studios, film work and medical and surgical installations, which makes it unusual among companies in the power and cable field.
Range & what it's known for
Power distribution is the backbone of the range. The Everest-X sits at the top in tower and shelf forms, with Delta-X as an eight-outlet unit, Eiger-X as a six-outlet unit, Typhon-X for high-current loads and the Denali-X and Hydra families beneath. Power cables include Delta NR, Theta and the long-running PowerSnakes name, while Omega-X covers speaker cables and interconnects. Altaira-X is a grounding product, and the company also sells digital cables and accessories. The engineering focus throughout is noise reduction on mains and signal lines, an area Gabriel has patented more than ten designs in.
Who owns it and where it's made
Gabriel still leads the business as chief executive and chief designer, and the name comes from a Sanskrit word for the stillness that precedes creation. Gabriel is a former US military research scientist who worked on ultra-sensitive data acquisition systems built to pick out very faint signals buried in noise, and he became interested in hi-fi while stationed in Germany. Production takes place in an 18,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Washington State, and products are distributed internationally.
The lineup in this catalog
Power cables and conditioners, from roughly USD 500 for entry cables to well above USD 10,000 for the top systems.
Who it's for
Owners of high-end audio or video systems, and studios, who want to treat mains supply and grounding as part of the system. Many owners begin with one power cable, adds a distributor such as Hydra or Denali-X, and later moves up to Everest-X, Omega-X wiring and an Altaira-X ground.
