Air Tight is the brand of A&M Limited, a Japanese maker of hand-wired vacuum-tube amplifiers, preamplifiers, phono equalisers, step-up transformers and moving-coil cartridges, founded in Osaka prefecture in April 1986. The founder, Atsushi Miura, had spent 30 years at Luxman before starting the firm together with designer Masami Ishiguro, and he remains its president. The company is small, builds every unit by hand and has exported to the United States since 1988.
Range & what it's known for
The first product, the ATM-1 push-pull EL34 stereo power amplifier, was released in 1986 and lives on as the ATM-1S and the ATM-1E 2024 Edition, both around 35 W per channel. Above it sit the KT88-based ATM-2Plus at 70 W per channel, the ATM-2001 that can run as a 338 W monoblock or a 180 W stereo amplifier, and the ATM-3211 reference mono at 120 W. Single-ended designs are the ATM-300R with one 300B triode per channel giving 9 W, a circuit descended from the ATM-300 of 1999, and the ATM-2211 mono at 32 W. Preamplifiers include the line-only ATC-3 and ATC-7 and the ATC-5S with a built-in phono stage, while the ATE-3011 is a build-to-order phono equaliser with five EQ curves. The analogue side is completed by the ATH-2, ATH-3 and ATH-3S step-up transformers and the PC-1 Coda, PC-1 Supreme and Opus-1 low-impedance moving-coil cartridges. Every amplifier is built with point-to-point wiring and no printed circuit boards.
Who owns it and where it's made
A&M Limited is a privately owned company. Atsushi Miura is president and founder, and co-founder Masami Ishiguro worked with him until his death in December 2015. In 2006, for the twentieth anniversary, the company moved into a larger factory in Takatsuki, a city between Kyoto and Osaka, which houses the workshop, a listening room and a collection of vintage audio equipment. All design, hand-wiring and assembly take place there.
The lineup in this catalog
Fourteen Air Tight products are listed here, covering tube amplifiers and phono stages, at prices from roughly USD 5,000 to well above USD 30,000.
Who it's for
Air Tight suits an owner of an analogue-centred system who wants tube electronics built to last decades and serviced by hand. The ATM-1S or ATM-1E with an ATC-3 is a first full Air Tight system for speakers of ordinary sensitivity, the ATM-300R is for horn or other high-efficiency loudspeakers, and the ATM-2001 or ATM-3211 monoblocks with the ATC-7 and ATE-3011 form the top of the path. Vinyl users can stay inside the brand from cartridge to step-up transformer to phono stage.
