The high-end audio segment today offers exceptional sound quality and a true triumph of engineering. The best cost-no-object solutions in modern digital-to-analog converters are here – these seven models will blow your mind with both their sound and their price tag.

Pros – dense, velvety presentation
The Accuphase DC-1000 digital-to-analog converter is based on the renowned ESS Sabre ES9038PRO eight-channel converter chip with parameters up to 32/384 and achieves a signal-to-noise ratio of 123 dB. Released to celebrate the company's fiftieth anniversary, this anniversary model is based on the company's proprietary MDSD / MDS+ circuit design. Separate low-noise power circuits for the analog and digital circuits and a built-in level control are the icing on the cake. Of course, everything here is top-notch – from the signal amplifiers with dual-balanced active filters backed with fluorocarbon resin and low-dielectric fiberglass, to the wooden enclosure with an 8 mm anti-vibration bottom plate and high-carbon cast iron supports. The sound of this device is truly luxurious and enchanting.

Pros – exceptionally beautiful sound
The Metronome c|AQWO 2 digital-to-analog converter (DAC) utilizes a highly sophisticated solution based on four audiophile chips (2 x AK4499EX, 2 x ES9039MPRO in dual mono mode), handles signals up to 32/768, and achieves a 138 dB signal-to-noise ratio. The output stage can be switched between solid-state and vacuum tube modes (based on a pair of Philips NOS JAN 6922). Particular attention has been paid to the power supply, housed in a separate enclosure, housing four toroidal transformers with Schaffner filters and 11 independent voltage regulation lines. The Metronome c|AQWO 2 sounds flexible and fluid, its sound almost devoid of digital nature.

Pros – the king of dynamics
The Aavik SD-588 digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is based on a proprietary 32-bit Continuum solution – a DAC with continuous, non-switching signal processing that guarantees minimal jitter. There's no dedicated converter chip here – an FPGA matrix handles the job, converting signals to DSD512. A specialized digital filter then smooths the signal without switching. Further refinements are provided by proprietary noise reduction circuits – 108 active Tesla coils, 216 active square Tesla coils, 9 dithering circuits, and a pair of gold anti-arial resonant coils. The Aavik SD-588 sounds ultra-dynamic and literally lifts the veil from the system.

Pros – innovative circuit design
The Master Fidelity Nadac D DAC boasts a sophisticated circuit design – it uses 1-bit decoding based on custom-designed integrated circuits and a reference voltage source with instrument-grade thermostatting. A clock generator with two-level frequency synthesis technology, an Advanced Digital Domain Clock Data Recovery System for AES/SPDIF, a USB solution based on Amanero, an MF Super Isolation Unit based on an ASIC for optimizing digital sound isolation, which minimizes jitter to 110 fs, and a hybrid system (the analog subsystem uses a transformer power supply, the digital one uses a switching power supply) – everything is perfect here. The sound matches – it's like an open window.

Pros – one of the most technically sophisticated models
The Soulution 760 DAC achieves a 140 dB signal-to-noise ratio and utilizes proprietary Zero-Phase Technology, eliminating temporal distortion introduced by analog filtering. A third-order Bessel filter with a cutoff frequency of 120 kHz ensures no more than 1 degree of error in the frequency response up to 100,000 Hz. The conversion itself is performed by proven Burr-Brown chips; the output current of each chip is converted to voltage and filtered. The output stage is based on a transistor circuit linearized by an analog computing network. The bandwidth reaches up to 40 MHz! The power supply, of course, is divided into analog and digital sections and is supplemented by a capacitor block more suitable for a power amplifier – a whopping 500,000 µF. Exceptional tonal accuracy and three-dimensional imaging are the device's best sound characteristics.

Pros – incredible sound
dCS Varèse is an attempt to definitively define the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) experience. The system consists of five components: the main streaming and processing unit, two mono DACs, a separate user interface unit, and an external clock generator for all system components. At the heart of the dCS Varèse is the latest version of the proprietary Ring DAC architecture. It also features the new, patented dCS Tomix synchronization technology. Furthermore, the system utilizes the proprietary Actus interface for transmitting audio, control, and synchronization signals, which reduces jitter and noise levels with crosstalk while simultaneously improving linearity. A true reference.

Pros – a contender for the title of market king
Another ultimate DAC in the ultra-high price range is the three-block MSB Technology Sentinel DAC. The model features a three-block configuration: Sentinel Digital Director (digital processing), Sentinel Analogue Converter (DAC and analog signal path), and Sentinel Power Supply. The analog section operates in dual-mono mode with 32 Hybrid DAC MKII modules (16 per channel) featuring Bit Diffusion Technology. Each channel is powered by a separate power supply. Custom-made temperature-stabilized crystal oscillators are the icing on the cake. A mind-blowing system.
