Zellaton STAGE Ultra High-End!

Seven octaves of midrange without a crossover - that is the engineering claim at the heart of this reference build, where the Zellaton STAGE, a German three-way floorstander whose sandwich-cone drivers were patented in 1930 and are still being refined today, is driven by the Gryphon Mephisto Stereo, a 108 kg pure Class A amplifier from Denmark. Rounded out with CH Precision electronics, a TechDAS/Kuzma/Air Tight analogue front end, a LampizatOr DAC and an Aurender streamer, it is a cost-no-object rig assembled to show what the STAGE does when nothing upstream is a compromise.

Why these components work together

The Zellaton STAGE rewards current more than watts - at 88 dB sensitivity and a 4-ohm load, its cabinets need an amplifier that stays composed however the impedance swings. The Mephisto Stereo is built for exactly that - 175W into 8 ohms, doubling to 350W and 700W into 4 and 2 ohms, delivered continuously in pure Class A with no global negative feedback and bandwidth beyond 350 kHz. That headroom is what lets the STAGE's lightweight sandwich diaphragms behave like a full-range speaker rather than a delicate midrange specialist. The CH Precision L1 line stage is a fully discrete, dual-monaural design chosen to keep the signal quiet so the amplifier's grip is heard, not coloured, while the matching CH Precision P1 phonostage, with both current- and voltage-sensing inputs, does the heavy lifting for vinyl. The analogue source is the priority here - a TechDAS Air Force III Premium S, an air-bearing, vacuum-hold-down turntable rated at 0.03% wow and flutter, paired with a Kuzma 4Point tonearm using sapphire/ruby four-point bearings and an Air Tight Opus-1 moving-coil cartridge. The LampizatOr Golden Gate 2 DAC and Aurender N30SA streamer cover digital without hardening the sound, and a Shunyata Research Hydra Triton keeps the whole system's power clean.

How it sounds

In a treated room the system is fast, quiet and dimensionally large, with the STAGE's characteristic "performers in the room" presence once past its 120-plus-hour burn-in. Bass stays articulate at high volume, with no thickening, because the Mephisto never runs short of current. On well-recorded vinyl through the TechDAS/CH Precision chain, the noise floor drops away and voices sit in genuine space.
