Zellaton STAGE Ultra High-End!

Zellaton STAGE floorstanders, from the Munich maker's Klassik series, are powered here by the Gryphon Mephisto Stereo, a Danish class A amplifier with large current reserves. Around them sits a two-source chain, with CH Precision L1 and P1 electronics, a TechDAS Air Force III Premium S carrying a Kuzma 4Point and an Air Tight Opus-1, and an Aurender N30SA streaming into a LampizatOr Golden Gate 2.

The system at a glance

Ten boxes make up the set, including a Shunyata Research Hydra Triton for power. The STAGE was priced at USD 89,975 per pair and the Mephisto Stereo at USD 57,000, so the speaker and amplifier together reach about USD 147,000 before any source. Analogue playback leads, with streaming alongside, and the scale suits a large dedicated listening room.

Why these components work together

The STAGE is a three-way tower with a 40 mm full-cone tweeter, a 180 mm mid woofer and a 220 mm woofer, each built from Zellaton's sandwich of aluminium film over composite foam. Zellaton rates it at 88 dB/1W/m and 4 ohm, with a range from 24 Hz to 40 kHz, in a cabinet 118 cm tall that weighs about 100 kg. A 4 ohm load at modest sensitivity favours an amplifier that holds voltage as impedance falls, and the Mephisto Stereo doubles from 175 W at 8 ohm to 350 W at 4 ohm and 700 W at 2 ohm. That leaves wide margin over the woofer's demands. Inputs are balanced, matching the dual-mono L1 line stage. The P1 phono stage takes up to three arms and combines current- and voltage-sensing inputs, while the Opus-1 has a 1.4 ohm coil that pairs with the current input. The Kuzma arm splits its bearings into two points for vertical and two for horizontal motion. The TechDAS deck has a moment of inertia of 3,506 kg/cm2. For files, the N30SA stores music on 8 TB of SSD and upsamples to 192 kHz before the Golden Gate 2. The Hydra Triton runs all outlets from one copper bus.

How it sounds

Light, stiff cones in all three bands keep transients clean, and the amplifier's surplus current keeps the single woofer controlled when levels rise. The result is a large, stable stage with firm bass on orchestral and acoustic material, and vinyl stays quiet in the background.

Considering a similar setup

The amplifier choice matters most, and it should stay stable into 4 ohm with real current behind it, since 88 dB is not high sensitivity. Rooms smaller than this setup can use a lower-powered transistor design, and Zellaton's REFERENCE MK II adds two woofers for larger spaces.
