Grandinote MACH 8 XL towers run from two Aries Cerat Concero 25 single-ended monoblocks, an Italian crossover-free speaker matched with Cypriot 845 valve amplification. Around them sits a heavy analogue rig - CH Precision L1 and P1, a TechDAS Air Force III Premium S with Kuzma 4Point arm and Air Tight Opus-1 - plus an Aurender N30SA feeding a LampizatOr Golden Gate 2.

The system at a glance

There are ten components in total, counting the monoblock pair as one. Grandinote priced the MACH 8 XL at EUR 24,000 per pair, a modest share of a budget dominated by the electronics and the turntable. Vinyl is the main source, streaming the second, and a Shunyata Research Hydra Triton handles mains distribution. It is aimed at a listener who wants low-power valves on an efficient, easy load.

Why these components work together

Each MACH 8 XL carries eight 16 cm full-range drivers with no crossover parts in their path and one horn compression tweeter behind a first-order high-pass. Sensitivity is 98 dB at 1 W/1 m with an 8 ohm impedance that stays close to resistive, since no reactive network sits between amplifier and woofers. That is the kind of load a single-ended triode handles well. The Concero 25 uses Elrog 845 output valves and an RCA 814 driver wired as a triode, with transformer coupling between stages. It is rated at 20 W in class A, and its output transformer has 2, 4 and 8 ohm taps, so the 8 ohm tap fits this speaker directly. Each chassis has four toroidal transformers, for output anodes, driver anodes, filaments and bias. Twenty watts into 98 dB gives ample level in a domestic room. The L1 line stage is fully discrete and balanced, and the P1 offers current-sensing inputs suited to the 1.4 ohm coil of the Opus-1. The 4Point has an effective length of 11 inch, and the Air Force III Premium S runs below 0.03 percent wow and flutter. The N30SA streams through an OCXO clock, and the Golden Gate 2 handles DSD512.

How it sounds

With no crossover parts on the woofers and a valve amplifier working into a flat load, timbre comes through full and warm, and voices have body without edge. The eight small cones share the bass, so the low end stays quick at moderate levels rather than heavy.

Considering a similar setup

Keep the amplifier on the 8 ohm tap and favour single-ended or low-power valve designs, since the speaker needs little power and gains most from a simple path. Grandinote's MACH 9 is the brand's other large crossover-free tower, and the analogue front end can scale down without changing the logic.
