Grandinote MACH 8 XL Rule

Powerful transistor amplification actually proved inadequate for this loudspeaker according to Hifiverse's own hands-on review, and that's an unusual thing to read about a system built around CH Precision and TechDAS electronics. The Grandinote MACH 8 XL, eight unfiltered woofers and a single horn compression tweeter with no crossover network anywhere in the design, needed something else entirely - the Aries Cerat Concerto 25, a single-ended tube monoblock built around Elrog 845 output tubes.

The system at a glance

Ten components built around a crossover-free Italian loudspeaker design, with Hifiverse's own listening notes documenting a mid-review amplifier swap after solid-state power failed to bring out the speaker's character. This is a system for a listener specifically drawn to high-sensitivity, tube-friendly loudspeaker engineering, tested and refined in real time rather than assembled purely on paper specifications.

Why these components work together

The MACH 8 XL removes every reactive crossover component, capacitors, inductors and resistors, entirely from its eight full-range woofers, relying instead on a proprietary Semi Resonance Tube cabinet loading and mechanical filtering alone to manage driver behaviour, a design philosophy the company summarises simply as "no crossover, no distortion, only truth." That approach pushes sensitivity to 98dB into a benign 8-ohm load, and it's precisely this combination, extreme efficiency plus a purely resistive, non-reactive impedance curve, that made the difference in Hifiverse's own testing - the original CH Precision solid-state amplification, however capable on paper, didn't suit the MACH 8 XL's character the way low-power tube amplification did. The Aries Cerat Concerto 25 monoblocks use a single-stage circuit with transformer-coupled stage-to-stage communication, Elrog 845 output tubes and an RCA 814 triode driver stage chosen for its low internal resistance and high steepness, fed by four separate toroidal transformers per channel dedicated individually to output-tube anodes, driver-tube anodes, filament heating and bias supply, a serious power-supply architecture for what remains, in wattage terms, a comparatively low-power design well suited to the MACH 8 XL's 98dB efficiency. The CH Precision L1 preamplifier and P1 phonostage, alongside a TechDAS Air Force III Premium S turntable, Kuzma 4Point tonearm and Air Tight Opus-1 cartridge, remain unchanged from the original electronics stack, meaning the amplifier swap alone was what unlocked the loudspeaker's actual character.

How it sounds

Hifiverse's own listening notes describe a warm, airy performance with rich, full-bodied timbre from the very first chords, explicitly steering away from analytical or surgical precision, exactly the outcome a crossover-free, high-sensitivity horn-and-multi-woofer design paired with well-matched single-ended tube amplification is built to deliver, and a result the original, more conventionally powerful solid-state chain apparently could not achieve on its own.
