Denon is a Japanese maker of AV receivers, hi-fi components and wireless audio whose history starts in 1910, when American entrepreneur Frederick Whitney Horn set up Nippon Chikuonki Shoukai in Japan. The name itself comes from Nippon Denki Onkyo Kabushikigaisha, the Japan Electric Sound Company formed in a 1939 merger. Today Denon is best known worldwide for home cinema receivers sold from entry level to large multichannel flagships.
Range & what it's known for
Denon builds its range around the AVR-X series of home theatre receivers, recently updated with a 32-bit multichannel DAC architecture. Alongside sit the PMA integrated amplifiers, CD and SACD players, turntables, headphones and the HEOS multiroom streaming platform. The brand also has deep roots in recording technology, having built Japan's first professional disc recorder and taken part in early digital audio development. For its 110th anniversary Denon issued a limited set of products, including the PMA-A110 integrated amplifier with a 25 kg chassis.
Who owns it and where it's made
After leaving Hitachi in 2001 under Ripplewood Holdings, Denon merged with Marantz in 2002 to form D&M Holdings. Sound United took over D+M in 2017, and in September 2025 Sound United was acquired by Harman International, a Samsung Electronics subsidiary, so Marantz remains a sister brand in the same group. Receivers are still developed and tuned at the Shirakawa Audio Works in Japan, and the anniversary models were built exclusively in the Shirakawa factory.
The lineup in this catalog
Here Denon appears with AV receivers, amplifiers and turntables, several models across these categories. Prices start around USD 300 for affordable receivers and climb to several thousand for the top separates.
Who it's for
A first Denon is often a compact AV receiver for a living room TV setup, with HEOS adding streaming to other rooms. Owners who want more channels or processing step up through the AVR-X ladder, while two-channel listeners can move into the PMA amplifiers and disc players. Denon works well in a home where one Japanese brand with a long engineering record should cover both the cinema room and the stereo.
