Devialet Astra Integrated Amplifier - Full Review

Sound of a New Era

Devialet Astra is the latest French integrated amplifier, featuring a built-in streamer, digital-to-analog converter, and phono stage - a direct successor to the acclaimed Devialet Expert series. All of this capability is packaged in a slim chassis measuring just 47 mm in height and weighing 7.3 kg. The remarkable amplification performance is delivered by the proprietary ADH (Analog Digital Hybrid) topology, which combines a Class A analog preamplification stage with a Class D output stage, producing 150 W into 8 ohms and 300 W into 4 ohms. A fully featured phono stage is included as standard.

The Devialet Astra achieves an output impedance of 0.002 ohms - among the lowest of any integrated amplifier on the market. These specifications translate into phenomenal bass control, which, combined with a signal-to-noise ratio of 128 dB, made a pitch-black noise floor during silent passages and exceptionally transparent sound reproduction. There is no tube warmth here - but in terms of accuracy, freedom from distortion, and resolution, this amplifier has few rivals at any price point.

Speaker Matching

The Devialet Astra employs the proprietary SAM (Speaker Active Matching) optimization system, which corrects amplification parameters for more than 1,200 loudspeakers stored in its internal database. The amplifier is at its best when paired with dynamically demanding, low-impedance speakers such as the B&W 800 Series, KEF Reference, Focal Sopra or Utopia, and Wilson Audio. Impedance dips as low as 2.8 ohms present no difficulties whatsoever. Planar or electrostatic speakers are best avoided - the current delivery headroom may prove insufficient. Equally, pairing the Astra with Harbeth or Spendor loudspeakers may result in an overly clinical sonic picture that does not flatter either component.

Design

It is tempting to assume that amplifier quality is defined by weight and dimensions. That assumption holds true for conventional Class AB and Class A designs with their heavy transformers and heatsinks. In this case, however, the genuinely revolutionary sonic quality and outstanding specifications are delivered by the proprietary ADH - Analog Digital Hybrid - module. There is some confusion surrounding the precise interpretation of this topology, but in practice it comprises a Class A preamplification stage responsible for voltage gain and signal processing, supplemented by a parallel Class D stage that provides current delivery and loudspeaker control. Think of it as power-assisted steering: the steering wheel itself is the Class A analog amplification, and the power assistance is the Class D current-delivery system.

Equally important is the digital-to-analog conversion module, built around a pair of classic Burr-Brown PCM1792 chips and the proprietary Magic Wire architecture, which performs current-to-voltage conversion within five centimeters of the amplification stage. All audio signals are upsampled to 192 kHz 32-bit regardless of source format and processed by an 800 MHz SHARC processor executing the SAM and RAM algorithms. A separate iMX8 processor manages the DOS3 operating system and streaming functions.

The Devialet Astra also boasts an exceptionally versatile built-in phono stage, offering 13 RIAA equalization curves (including Decca, Columbia, and RCA), loading adjustable from 10 ohms to 47 kohms in 5-ohm steps, and capacitance settings from 0 to 600 pF. The Record Active Matching (RAM) system adds a further layer of fine-tuning, allowing the signal to be optimized for specific cartridge types. It would be difficult to find anything remotely comparable as a standalone solution priced below two thousand euros - though it should be noted that all signals are converted to digital for processing. At today's level of digital capability, this is no longer a shortcoming: Linn, for example, has long offered a top-tier phono stage with a digital signal path.

Technical specifications of this caliber were previously the exclusive preserve of monoblock amplifiers from the likes of Boulder, D'Agostino, and Soulution - all of which cost substantially more than this integrated. It was therefore compelling to hear what the Astra would do in practice.

Installation

The 47 mm chassis height means the rear panel is quite tightly populated. Blind cable-swapping is essentially out of the question, and adequate clearance behind the equipment rack is strongly advisable. Those are the only criticisms. The unit looks genuinely striking, the remote control is ergonomically excellent, and pairing with the B&W 802 D4 proved entirely straightforward - current reserves were more than adequate, and bass control was outstanding. It should be noted that our review sample had already accumulated over 100 hours of run-in prior to evaluation - and based on previous Devialet models, burn-in is likely to be a meaningful factor.

Listening

The 0.002-ohm output impedance yields a measured damping factor exceeding 4,000 - more than double the specification sheet figure. The result: Ray Brown's double bass on "Exactly Like You" comes alive in the most vivid and physical way, communicating every nuance from string vibration to body resonance. The image of the instrument simply materializes in the room.

Beethoven's Fifth Symphony as recorded by the Vienna Philharmonic is a genuine stress test for any system. The Devialet Astra passed with distinction - the most complex violin passages offered no grounds for criticism whatsoever, and the transparency of reproduction was consistently remarkable. There is no exaggeration or tube-like warmth here, none of that characteristic velvet sheen. The presentation is honest, genuinely open, and airy - but never overblown. Dynamic performance, both at the micro and macro level, is of reference standard.

Given the presence of a Class D output stage under the hood (however sophisticated its Class A control topology may be), a degree of elevated treble energy was anticipated. It was not forthcoming. The Brubeck's "Take Five" sounded entirely natural, free from any synthetic edge. The noise floor, by contrast, was as black as one could wish. Finally, the soundstage. Rebecca Pidgeon's "Spanish Harlem" presented a large-scale, three-dimensional image with precise localization throughout. There was nothing to fault.

Conclusion

The Devialet Astra's revolutionary architecture delivers exceptionally high sonic quality. It is the amplifier for those listeners who prize transparent, accurate sound reproduction above all else.
