SMSL VMV P2 MK2 – Flagship Headphone Amplifier with Up to 14 W of Power

SMSL has expanded its premium VMV series with the new VMV P2 MK2 desktop headphone amplifier. The new model was introduced alongside the flagship VMV D2R MK2 DAC, which was previously covered, and belongs to the updated MK2 generation of devices. SMSL positions this pairing as one of the brand’s most advanced solutions for desktop Hi-Fi systems, aimed at audiophiles and professional users.

A key feature of the SMSL VMV P2 MK2 is its unusual circuit design with 99 operational amplifiers operating in a parallel architecture. This approach is intended to provide both a high voltage swing for full-size high-impedance headphones and substantial current output for planar-magnetic models. The amplifier’s maximum claimed output power is 14 W per channel.

Despite its high power potential, the SMSL VMV P2 MK2 is not designed only for demanding full-size headphones. For more flexible adjustment, it features an improved volume control and three gain levels. The lowest gain mode is intended for sensitive in-ear monitors: according to SMSL, it allows such earphones to be used without noticeable background noise.

The amplifier’s power supply uses GaN technology based on gallium nitride. The manufacturer emphasizes the high efficiency of this solution and the reduced noise in the power supply circuits. In addition, the SMSL VMV P2 MK2 received a fully balanced four-channel PLFC+ architecture with precision linear feedback.

The stated technical specifications underline the model’s flagship status: total harmonic distortion is listed at 0.00006%, while the dynamic range reaches 135 dB. Headphones can be connected via balanced 4.4 mm Pentaconn and 4-pin XLR outputs, as well as through a standard 6.35 mm output.

The SMSL VMV P2 MK2 can also be used as a preamplifier – for this purpose, it is equipped with XLR and RCA analogue outputs. The chassis follows the premium design language typical of the VMV series. The recommended retail price of the new headphone amplifier is US$1,160.
