British company Quad Hifi has expanded its Platina series by introducing its third component – the Platina CDT CD transport. The model was announced earlier and has now officially reached the market. The unit does not feature a built-in digital-to-analogue converter, which is entirely logical: the DAC section is already included in the Quad Platina Integrated amplifier.
The new Quad Platina CDT is housed in a steel chassis mounted on anti-resonance feet, while its front panel is made from thick aluminium. The design follows the same understated style as the other components in the Platina family, allowing the unit to match seamlessly with the Platina Integrated and Platina Stream models. The front panel houses the power button, a disc tray, playback control buttons, and a 4.3-inch colour display. The screen is used to show metadata as well as user-selected settings.

The Platina CDT is a dedicated transport designed for use with optical discs. Its construction places particular emphasis on suppressing vibration and reducing electrical interference: to achieve this, it employs a shielded transport mechanism and a carefully thought-out internal layout. Digital-to-analogue conversion is therefore handled outside the unit by an external DAC – for example, the one built into the Quad Platina Integrated.

At the heart of the component is a custom CD drive working in conjunction with a proprietary servo control system. A dual-core processor handles the incoming digital data stream, with the aim of minimising read errors and reducing jitter before the signal is passed to an external digital-to-analogue converter. Optical and coaxial digital outputs are provided for connection.
Particular attention has been paid to timing accuracy in this model. Synchronisation is handled by a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator, or TCXO, working alongside a separate low-noise power supply. The manufacturer has also implemented independent power rails for the drive motor, servo system, control electronics, and display module in order to reduce interaction between subsystems and lower interference levels. The power supply uses a Noratel toroidal transformer, while critical circuits benefit from additional isolation.

In addition to standard factory-pressed compact discs, the Quad Platina CDT can also work with CD-R, CD-RW, and data discs. A USB-A port on the rear panel allows audio files to be played back from external storage devices. Supported formats include FLAC, WAV, WMA, AAC, MP3, and APE, with signal processing during USB playback handled by the same internal clocking and data-processing systems used for disc playback.

The arrival of the Quad Platina CDT shows that interest in the CD format still remains, despite the rapid growth of streaming services and the spread of high-resolution audio. Quad is targeting the new model at listeners who continue to use physical media and want a high-quality digital source for their audio system, without giving up the option of playing music files from USB storage.
The Quad Platina CDT measures 445 × 135 × 310 mm and weighs 10.9 kg. The model will be available in black and silver finishes. Sales are scheduled to begin in April 2026, while the recommended retail price in the United Kingdom has been set at £1,499.
