Focal has updated one of the most recognizable models in its flagship Utopia series with the introduction of the Scala Utopia Evo M floorstanding loudspeaker. The new model develops the concept of the previous Scala Utopia, retaining its three-way bass-reflex design and signature multi-section cabinet, while receiving major changes in almost all key areas. Focal’s engineers revised the driver array, filters, acoustic tuning and mechanical cabinet structure, while preserving the model’s distinctive sound and its status as one of the central products in the Utopia line.
One of the main innovations is the 5-inch midrange driver. It features a reinforced W cone with an M-shaped geometry and is borrowed from Focal’s professional Utopia Main monitor series. The design uses a composite W sandwich cone, TMD suspension, a neodymium magnet system and a large 80 mm voice coil. According to the manufacturer, this driver should provide more precise control in the midrange, reduce coloration and deliver a more transparent reproduction of musical material.

For high-end loudspeaker systems, the midrange is especially important, as it contains vocals, the main tonal information of instruments and a significant part of the emotional perception of music. For this reason, Focal focused not only on linearity, but also on the driver’s behavior at high volume levels. The updated midrange driver is intended to maintain stability and low distortion even when reproducing dense and dynamically complex recordings.
High frequencies are handled by a new 27 mm inverted-dome PRISM tweeter with an M profile. This technology has already been used in Focal’s flagship wireless system, Diva Utopia. The PRISM abbreviation stands for Photon-Refined Intelligent Structured Membrane and refers to a multilayer diaphragm made from different materials and enhanced with a microstructured surface. Focal claims that this solution combines extremely high rigidity, exceeding that of beryllium, with low mass and effective damping, which are needed for precise and delicate high-frequency reproduction.

The tweeter is complemented by the IAL2 Infinite Acoustic Loading system, which helps lower the resonance frequency to 528 Hz and extend the upper frequency response to 40 kHz. The bass section has also been modernized. The 11-inch W woofer receives a dual ferrite magnet system measuring 16 cm in diameter, along with a more precisely manufactured composite sandwich cone produced using laser cutting. The bass-reflex system is equipped with a large laminar port designed to reduce turbulence noise, compression and unwanted resonances under high load.

According to Focal, the Scala Utopia Evo M is capable of delivering bass with a ±3 dB frequency response down to 27 Hz, while the lower limit at -6 dB reaches 24 Hz. For a floorstanding loudspeaker of this format, that indicates serious low-frequency potential. At the same time, Scala remains a more living-room-friendly alternative to the larger senior Utopia models, while preserving the scale, depth and dynamic freedom expected from Focal’s flagship series.
The OPC+ crossover has also been redesigned. It uses audiophile-grade components, larger-gauge internal wiring and four WBT terminals that allow for bi-wiring or bi-amping. The user can additionally adjust the levels of the bass, midrange and treble. Bass and high-frequency adjustment is available within a ±1 dB range, making it possible to fine-tune the sound more precisely for the room, system and owner’s personal preferences.

The Scala Utopia Evo M cabinet is made from MDF panels up to 60 mm thick and is complemented by a massive vibration-damping structure developed with the help of vibration analysis. Focal’s Focus Time technology is responsible for mechanically aligning the drivers in relation to the listener, improving their time coherence. Separate internal chambers help preserve phase integrity between the low-frequency, midrange and high-frequency sections.

Production of the Scala Utopia Evo M cabinets takes place at Focal’s facility in Burgundy, while the drivers are manufactured in Saint-Étienne. The loudspeaker will be available in five finishes, including black and light piano lacquer, a warm taupe shade, as well as natural walnut versions at an additional cost. Sales of the Focal Scala Utopia Evo M are scheduled to begin in August 2026, with the recommended European price starting from €40,000 per pair.
