British company dCS has introduced the MCD 16 – a new digital-to-analog converter and the brand’s first model developed from the outset for multichannel audio formats. The device will make its public debut at High End Vienna 2026, which will take place in Vienna from June 4 to 7. Deliveries of the dCS MCD 16 are scheduled for autumn 2026; closer to that date, the manufacturer promises to reveal the full technical specifications and recommended price.

Data Conversion Systems, better known as dCS, has been developing and manufacturing digital audio equipment in Cambridge since 1987. The company gained recognition thanks to its proprietary Ring DAC architecture and a small but carefully structured range of High End digital components. dCS solutions have long been regarded as one of the benchmarks in digital conversion and music playback.

The MCD 16 is built around eight separate Ring DAC circuits and supports 16 independent channels of conversion. In effect, dCS is bringing its core discrete technology, well known from the company’s stereo components, into the field of multichannel and spatial audio. The company emphasizes that the new model does not change the brand’s philosophy, but expands it for more complex audio systems.

The dCS MCD 16 will premiere at High End Vienna 2026 as part of a joint demonstration with Trinnov Audio and Perlisten Audio. For the presentation, the companies will prepare a reference immersive audio system in which the entire signal chain – from signal decoding and digital-to-analog conversion to loudspeaker performance and the construction of the spatial soundstage – is intended to operate with maximum precision and consistency.
The demonstration system will use a 15.8.8 configuration. Such a large-scale setup is intended to show not merely the impact of a high channel count, but the potential of multichannel music as a High End category in its own right. dCS aims to demonstrate a high level of stability, coherence and realism in spatial sound, taking immersive audio beyond the familiar context of home cinema.

Throughout the exhibition, daily listening sessions will be held under the direction of Justin Gray, producer and Grammy Award winner. He is known for his work in immersive music production and will present specially selected recordings in the formats for which they were created. Visitors will be able not only to hear the material, but also to receive explanations of the artistic concept and the technical side of this approach to recording and playback.
Access to the demonstrations will be open only to visitors of High End Vienna 2026, and participation will require advance reservation. Serial deliveries of the dCS MCD 16 are expected to begin in autumn 2026. At that time, the company plans to announce the price of the device and publish detailed technical information about the new model.
