Musical Fidelity M5xi – Another Integrated Amplifier from the British Brand

The company Musical Fidelity has released the M5xi integrated amplifier, continuing the update of its amplification lineup. The model replaces the M5si and incorporates a number of solutions inspired by the flagship TITAN platform: 160 watts per channel, an HDMI eARC input, a redesigned phono stage, and expanded connectivity options.

According to the manufacturer, the M5xi integrated amplifier has been significantly upgraded compared to its predecessor. Engineers at Musical Fidelity have revised the preamplifier, power amplifier, digital board, and phono stage. At the same time, the signature architecture with максимально separated left and right channels has been retained – effectively, the amplifier is built as two monoblock amplifiers in a single chassis, which should contribute to more precise stereo imaging.

One of the key features of the M5xi is the HDMI eARC port, designed for connecting a TV with a single cable. This allows the unit to serve as the center of a stereo system not only for music, but also for movies, TV shows, and games, without the need for complex cabling. The amplifier also includes optical and coaxial digital inputs, a USB-C port with support for PCM up to 24-bit / 192 kHz, four analog RCA inputs, and a home theatre bypass mode.

Connectivity is further expanded with a 5 V / 2 A USB-A port for powering an external streamer, an RS232 interface for integration into control systems, preamp outputs for bi-amping or connecting an active subwoofer, and a fixed line output that can be used, for example, with a dedicated headphone amplifier.

The built-in phono stage has also been notably improved. Musical Fidelity claims a new layout, better shielding, and reduced noise and distortion. A key upgrade over the M5si is support not only for MM cartridges but also MC cartridges, making the amplifier more versatile for vinyl playback systems.

Volume control is handled by a stepped Burr-Brown attenuator, designed to provide more accurate channel balance, especially at low listening levels. Overall, the M5xi is engineered with a focus on low noise and distortion, as well as high current capability for driving demanding loudspeakers.

The Musical Fidelity M5xi delivers 160 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 240 watts into 4 ohms. The digital and HDMI boards are powered by separate linear power supplies, while the transformer and power supply board are enclosed in a metal shield to reduce electromagnetic interference. The recommended retail price is $2,690 / €2,290.
