Swiss company Wattson Audio has launched the Madison Phono, a phono stage designed for MM and MC cartridges as well as DS Audio optical cartridges. Unlike conventional models, the new unit employs a hybrid architecture: after initial analogue amplification, the signal is converted to digital at 32-bit/384kHz DXD resolution, with subsequent equalisation and filtering performed in the digital domain. According to the manufacturer, this approach reduces the number of analogue components in the signal path, improves parameter stability and lowers the noise floor.

The Madison Phono supports not only the standard RIAA equalisation curve but also historical Columbia, Teldec, EMI and Decca standards, with a claimed equalisation accuracy of ±0.1dB. A dedicated input stage based on an active transimpedance circuit is provided for DS Audio optical cartridges. Wattson Audio says this solution delivers a more stable frequency response, improves transient reproduction and helps maintain a low noise level.

The Madison Phono can be integrated into both fully analogue and digital systems. In addition to a stereo RCA output, the unit features coaxial and optical S/PDIF outputs, allowing the processed signal to be sent directly to an external DAC or network audio component. The Madison Phono’s enclosure is machined from a solid block of aluminium, while network connectivity is used for remote control and firmware updates. The design also accommodates three interchangeable input modules, enabling the unit to be configured for different cartridge types.

As an option, Wattson Audio offers the external Madison Power S power supply, designed to reduce electrical interference and improve the stability of the sensitive input stages. The Madison Phono is available in light grey and dark grey finishes and is already on sale. The recommended retail price is $5,495 or €5,240 with one input module included, while each additional module costs $500 or €500.
