Moon Adds Two Models to the Compass Series

Moon has expanded its Compass lineup with two new components: the Moon 491 preamplifier/streamer and the Moon 461 stereo power amplifier. These models broaden the series, which previously included the Moon 371 all-in-one system, and make Compass a more flexible platform for building a High End audio system.

The Moon 491 is a multifunctional device that combines a network player, preamplifier, digital-to-analogue converter, phono stage and headphone amplifier. This solution is aimed at users who need a central control unit for a modern audio system with support for both digital and analogue sources.

The Moon 491’s network capabilities are based on the company’s proprietary MiND 2 platform. It provides access to streaming playback and is complemented by support for AirPlay and Bluetooth. The device can be controlled via the Moon MiND Controller mobile app, which serves as the main interface for setup and music playback.

The built-in phono stage in the Moon 491 is compatible with MM and MC cartridges. For precise matching with a specific cartridge, the unit offers adjustable load, gain, capacitance and equalisation settings. All parameters are available through the on-screen menu, making it easier to integrate a vinyl turntable into the system.

The preamplifier’s connectivity options include RCA and XLR line-level inputs, a dedicated phono input, variable and fixed RCA outputs, a balanced XLR output, and a 6.35 mm headphone output. This allows the Moon 491 to operate either as a standalone system hub or as part of a more complex setup with a separate power amplifier.

Moon has paid particular attention to the power supply in the 491. The device uses Moon Hybrid Power technology, which combines linear and switching power supply circuits. This approach is intended to provide stable power delivery, low noise levels and correct operation of sensitive audio circuits.

The second new model is the Moon 461, a stereo power amplifier and the most powerful amplifier in the Compass collection. It is designed for precise signal amplification while preserving dynamics, transparency and control, including when driving demanding loudspeakers.

At the heart of the Moon 461 is the proprietary Moon Distortion-Cancelling Amplifier architecture, previously used in the flagship North Collection. This technology is aimed at reducing distortion and improving amplification linearity, which should contribute to cleaner and more accurate sound reproduction.

Each channel in the Moon 461 has its own dedicated Moon Hybrid Power module. This dual configuration helps improve channel separation, reduce interaction between channels and maintain amplifier stability when connected to low-impedance loudspeakers. In addition, the model supports several operating modes, expanding its application options in different audio systems.

Both new products are finished in the unified Compass Collection design: a black chassis, aluminium side panels and a restrained minimalist aesthetic. With the arrival of the Moon 491 and Moon 461, the Compass series becomes a full-fledged modular lineup, allowing users to build systems of different levels – from a compact universal solution to a separate High End setup.
