Leak Sandwich 100 – a Compact Addition to the Lineup of the British Brand

Leak Audio has expanded its famous Sandwich series with a new model – the two-way bookshelf speaker Sandwich 100. It is the most compact speaker in the family, which also includes the Sandwich 150 and Sandwich 250 models. The new release is aimed primarily at smaller listening rooms, where compact speaker dimensions are especially important without compromising sound quality.

The Sandwich name goes back to the brand’s history. Back in 1961, Leak Audio developed a driver cone with a multilayer structure designed to increase diaphragm rigidity while simultaneously reducing distortion. At the time, this technology became a notable event in the British Hi-Fi industry, as it helped combat parasitic resonances and loss of control typical of traditional materials. Today, this engineering idea has found a new embodiment in the modern Sandwich series models, including the entry-level Sandwich 100.

At the heart of the Leak Sandwich 100 is a 150 mm woofer/midrange driver equipped with a modern version of the brand’s signature sandwich cone. Its construction includes an outer aluminum layer and a Rohacell foam core – a lightweight and durable material widely used in the aerospace industry. This choice makes it possible to combine high rigidity with low mass, which has a positive effect on playback accuracy and helps reduce unwanted distortion.

The upper range is handled by a 30 mm soft textile dome tweeter. For a speaker in this class, that size can be considered quite large. According to the manufacturer, this solution makes it possible to use a lower crossover frequency and improve the system’s power handling compared to other compact models.

The crossover network is built using polypropylene capacitors, air-core inductors, and precision resistors. The circuit has been optimized to ensure proper phase alignment between the drivers and to maintain smooth speaker behavior not only at the main listening position but also off axis. As a result, the manufacturer promises a stable stereo image and an even tonal balance under various placement conditions.

The speaker cabinet is made using MDF and other dense wood-based materials selected for their ability to effectively suppress unwanted resonances. The structure is further reinforced with internal bracing and damping elements that reduce vibration. A rear-firing bass reflex port helps the system deliver more confident low-frequency performance.

In terms of appearance, the Sandwich 100 continues Leak Audio’s recognizable aesthetic. The speakers feature a natural walnut veneer finish, aluminum accents, and removable black acoustically transparent fabric grilles. The model’s look combines vintage associations with a neat modern presentation.

From a technical standpoint, the Leak Sandwich 100 is a two-way bass reflex bookshelf speaker with a sensitivity of 86 dB and a nominal impedance of 6 ohms. The manufacturer recommends using amplifiers rated from 25 to 100 watts. The lower frequency limit is specified at 44 Hz at –6 dB. Each speaker measures 340 × 210 × 250 mm.

Sales of the Leak Sandwich 100 are scheduled to begin in mid-April. In the UK market, the recommended retail price will be £499 per pair of speakers.
