Harbeth NLE-3 – Active Three-Way System with DSP and External Amplification

Harbeth has introduced its new Harbeth NLE-3 loudspeaker system. Unlike the brand’s classic passive speakers, this is a complete active setup comprising three-way loudspeakers, a six-channel Class D amplifier and a preamplifier with advanced digital signal processing. In this configuration, each driver is served by a dedicated amplification channel.

Harbeth describes the NLE-3 as the most technologically advanced loudspeaker system in the company’s history. It is based on the brand’s proprietary RADIAL cones, external DSP processing and a specially matched amplification unit. The manufacturer emphasises that the system is supplied as a ready-to-use solution: the user only needs to connect a signal source.

The Harbeth NLE-3 cabinets follow the proportions traditionally associated with monitor loudspeakers. Each speaker measures 610 x 313 x 424 millimetres and weighs up to 40 kilograms. Several finish options are available for the model, including walnut, satin black, ivory sand and midnight blue.

The acoustic section is built around a three-way design. Bass is handled by a 300 mm driver, while the midrange is reproduced by a 200 mm driver with a cone made from Harbeth’s patented RADIAL material. This technology is regarded as one of the brand’s key developments and is responsible for clarity and natural sound in the area most important to musical perception. The high-frequency range is assigned to a 21 mm dome tweeter with ferrofluid cooling. The stated frequency response of the Harbeth NLE-3 is 35 Hz to 20 kHz at ±3 dB.

The DSP controller plays an important role in the system. It allows the sound to be adapted to a specific room and provides access to settings for tone, bass management, volume, filter slopes and spatial presentation.

In the UK, the recommended retail price of the Harbeth NLE-3 is £22,995. This price includes a pair of loudspeakers, the six-channel amplifier and the DSP preamplifier.
