Emotiva has announced the XSP-2 preamplifier, a new model designed for high-end stereo systems. The unit succeeds the Emotiva XSP-1 preamplifier, introduced back in 2013, and significantly develops its concept. With the new model, Emotiva has focused on modern circuitry, expanded connectivity and the possibility of future upgrades thanks to a modular design.
One of the key features of the Emotiva XSP-2 preamplifier is its modular platform. In its basic configuration, the new model already comes equipped with a fully balanced DAC module based on an ESS chip. In the future, the manufacturer plans to release a dedicated streaming module for the model, which can be added without complicated modifications to the design. This approach makes the Emotiva XSP-2 a more versatile component, intended not only for current but also for future usage scenarios.

The digital section of the device offers a wide range of inputs. These include HDMI-ARC, USB-C, two coaxial and two optical ports. At the same time, the digital module has its own shielding, designed to reduce possible interference with the sensitive analogue circuits. Despite the addition of a built-in DAC, Emotiva emphasises that the XSP-2 remains a dedicated preamplifier, with priority given to the quality of the analogue signal path.

The analogue section of the Emotiva XSP-2 is built around a fully balanced and differential architecture. This solution is intended to provide a low noise floor, effective interference rejection and more accurate transmission of low-level musical details. In addition, the model features a balanced bass-management system for 2.1 and 2.2 configurations. Users can select crossover frequencies of 40, 60, 80 or 100 Hz for the high-pass and low-pass filters, while the subwoofer outputs support both stereo operation and summed mono mode.

For owners of vinyl turntables, the Emotiva XSP-2 includes a built-in phono stage with support for MM and MC cartridges. This allows a wide range of turntables to be connected to the preamplifier without the need for an external phono stage. The model is also equipped with a headphone output based on a current-feedback amplifier. According to Emotiva, this section is designed to operate confidently even with headphones that present a more demanding load.

Signal switching in the Emotiva XSP-2 is handled by fourth-generation sealed subminiature relays. This switching method was chosen to reduce noise, crosstalk and unwanted artefacts when changing sources. In addition, the preamplifier features an external processor loop and Home Theater Bypass mode, allowing it to be integrated both into a classic two-channel system and into a home cinema setup.
The front panel features a large blue OLED display, which is bigger than the screen used in the previous model. The device can be controlled either via the menu on the preamplifier itself or with the included remote control. Users have access to settings for MM/MC cartridge type, channel balance, bass-management filters and subwoofer output mode.
The Emotiva XSP-2 preamplifier is already available for purchase. The recommended retail price of the new model is $1,599.
