Cambridge Audio Launches L/R X Active Speakers With 800 Watts of Power

Cambridge Audio has announced the global launch of its flagship L/R X active speaker system, which made its debut earlier this year at CES in Las Vegas. Despite their relatively compact bookshelf-style enclosures, the manufacturer positions the model as an alternative to floorstanding speakers, capable of delivering large-scale sound and deep bass. The new speakers are scheduled to go on sale in August.

The Cambridge Audio L/R X speaker system features a two-way design with a 28 mm tweeter equipped with a toroidal chamber. The low-frequency range is handled by two 5-inch drivers complemented by a pair of 6-inch passive radiators. The latter are arranged to cancel mechanical vibrations within the enclosure while extending bass response without the need for a separate subwoofer.

The built-in amplifiers deliver a total output of 800 watts, with 400 watts available to each speaker. The fully active architecture eliminates the need for an external amplifier or a separate rack of audio components. Digital signal processing is performed with 64-bit precision, while Cambridge Audio’s proprietary DynamEQ technology automatically adjusts the sound to help preserve its fullness and tonal balance even at lower listening levels.

A built-in digital signal processor allows the system to be adapted to the characteristics of a particular room. The StreamMagic mobile app provides access to a seven-band equaliser and room-correction tools. The left and right speakers can communicate wirelessly using the high-quality WiSA HT standard, helping to reduce the number of cables required in the system.

The networking capabilities of the Cambridge Audio L/R X are based on the company’s StreamMagic Gen 4 platform. It supports high-resolution audio streaming over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, as well as Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz, Amazon Music, AirPlay and Google Cast. AirPlay 2, Google Cast and Roon compatibility are also provided for integration into multiroom audio systems.

The connection options include an HDMI eARC port for use with a television, analogue and digital audio inputs, and an output for an external subwoofer. The system also features a built-in phono stage for MM cartridges, allowing a turntable to be connected directly. Wireless connectivity is supplemented by Bluetooth, while a dedicated Bluetooth remote control is included.

The Cambridge Audio L/R X active speakers will be available in six finishes, each featuring LED lighting along the lower section of the enclosure. The standard version is priced at $2,299 or €1,999 per pair. The Real Walnut finish will cost $2,399 or €2,099.
