Audio Research LS-3 – Solid-State Preamplifier with Expansion Modules

With the launch of the Audio Research LS-3, the American company is addressing audiophiles who want a no-compromise line-level preamplifier without vacuum tubes, yet with a truly high-end level of performance. The new model continues the philosophy of the brand’s classic preamplifiers, but places its emphasis on a modern fully balanced solid-state platform designed for precision, transparency, and dynamic freedom of sound.

At the heart of the Audio Research LS-3 is a fully differential balanced circuit design. The input stage uses low-noise JFET transistors that are well suited to unlocking the potential of high-resolution sources, while voltage gain is handled by bipolar transistors. The output stage operates in pure Class A, underscoring the designers’ aim of achieving the most natural, stable, and musically convincing presentation possible.

Particular attention has been paid to the signal path architecture, which is implemented according to a dual-mono principle. Each channel is equipped with its own linear power supply and dedicated power transformer, a design choice that should have a positive effect on channel separation, noise reduction, and overall operational stability, even when reproducing complex musical material. This approach has long been associated with high-end components, where not only power but also fine microdynamics matter.

With a gain of 20 dB on both balanced and single-ended outputs, as well as low output impedance – 10 ohms via XLR and 25 ohms via RCA – the Audio Research LS-3 is designed for confident integration into a wide variety of systems, including installations using long interconnect cables. An input impedance of 25 kOhm makes the preamplifier an equally capable partner for classic CD players, external DACs, and modern streaming components.

One of the model’s most notable features is the touchscreen display on the front panel. It allows users to rename inputs, adjust brightness, choose color themes, and access other system parameters. The interface styling incorporates the brand’s GhostMeters design language, familiar from the Reference series, allowing the LS-3 to maintain a visual connection with Audio Research’s current flagship components while looking modern and instantly recognizable.

The Audio Research LS-3 preamplifier is housed in a fully aluminum chassis that combines high mechanical rigidity, effective shielding, and the brand’s signature understated aesthetic. In Europe, the standard version is already available at a price of 9,500 euros, while the version with built-in DAC and phono stage modules is priced at 10,990 euros. Buyers can choose between two finishes – black and silver.
