Clearaudio Compact Phono – Compact Phono Preamplifier for MM and MC Cartridges

Clearaudio has launched the new Compact Phono preamplifier, designed for use with both MM and MC cartridges. The unit is housed in a compact metal enclosure measuring 115 × 26 × 80 mm and can be placed directly next to a turntable without taking up much space. It is available in black and silver finishes.

The Compact Phono is based on an active feedback topology using low-noise, precision operational amplifiers. The gain stage is divided into two sections: the first provides the main signal amplification, while the second handles frequency correction and filtering. To suppress unwanted frequencies, the unit features a 16 Hz subsonic filter and a 70 kHz ultrasonic filter.

In MM mode, the phono preamplifier offers an input impedance of 47 kOhm with a capacitance of 100 pF, while MC cartridges are loaded at 100 Ohm with the same 100 pF capacitance. Users can select between 40 dB and 60 dB of gain, with both values increased compared with previous Clearaudio models. In MC mode, the specified headroom is 29 dB.

Power is supplied by an external ±18 V power unit with two linear regulators. Internally, the Compact Phono uses a four-layer circuit board with separate power and ground planes, along with thin-film resistors and precision capacitors. The Clearaudio Compact Phono MM/MC phono preamplifier is already available at a recommended retail price of €490 or $639.
