The Magico M7 loudspeakers are impressive at first glance – the tall (164 cm, 239 kg per speaker) model is equipped with six innovative drivers. Add the carbon fiber and aluminum enclosure and the Elliptical Symmetry crossover, and you have a true audiophile magnet worthy of careful examination and listening.
The Magico M7 speakers were conceived as more compact passive speakers than the M9. Naturally, the company utilized a whole host of professional measuring instruments during development, such as a Klippel near-field scanner and a Polytec laser Doppler vibrometer. The resulting design features a 1.1" MBD5D beryllium tweeter with a diamond coating, a 5" MAG5004RTC midrange driver, a pair of 9" MAG9508HE midbass drivers, and a pair of 12" MAG12008HE woofers. All drivers are proprietary, eighth-generation models. The speaker system's sensitivity reaches 92 dB, and its impedance is 4 ohms. With a recommended input power of 50 W to 1 kW, the frequency response extends from 18 Hz to 50,000 Hz.
Of particular interest is the MBD5D beryllium dome tweeter: its 28 mm diaphragm, with optimized geometry, is coated with diamond using chemical vapor deposition. New neodymium magnets add strength, and the redesigned tweeter enclosure was further enhanced using FEA modeling.
The midrange driver utilizes a Nano-Tec cone—an aluminum honeycomb structure with outer and inner layers of graphene-infused carbon fiber. Two large magnets generate a highly stable magnetic field, while a pure copper pole piece minimizes eddy currents.
Both the 9" and 12" woofers are equipped with Magico Gen 8 Nano-Tec cones of a similar structure and utilize 127mm voice coils with a motor system powered by a pair of large neodymium magnets on a vented titanium former. The 13mm driver excursion allows the loudspeakers to easily reach 120 dB SPL.
Magico wouldn't be Magico if it didn't incorporate numerous developments in its reverse-firing speakers to suppress cabinet vibrations and resonances. The Magico M7 speakers are housed in monocoque cabinets constructed from carbon fiber and modeled using finite element analysis (FEA). The front baffle, made of multiply 6061-T6 aluminum with additional aerospace composite damping, is attached to a similar rear aluminum baffle using tension rods. This minimizes cabinet diffraction, resulting in a highly rigid cabinet that stores virtually no energy.
The icing on the cake is the Elliptical Symmetry Crossover (ESXO), built with components from Mundorf and Duelund Coherent Audio, as well as MPOD anti-vibration mounts, which maximally decouple the already inert speaker cabinet from the floor.
Listening was conducted in a minimally acoustically prepared room of approximately 60 square meters. The Magico M7 was paired with reference-quality Dan D'Agostino Relentless 800 monoblock amplifiers (each weighing 145 kilograms and rated at 800 watts), along with a Dan D'Agostino Relentless Preamp.
The digital path utilized an Antipodes Oladra streaming server paired with a Playback Designs MPD 8Ai DAC. The analog source was a Bergmann Signature Gold turntable with air-suspension platter and tonearm, and a Vitus SP 103 MKII phono preamplifier. Connections were made with ZenSati #X cables.
From the very first chords, the Magico M7 impresses with both the scale of its sound and the density of its soundscape. Many high-end speakers easily create a sound wall effect and full-body imaging, but few speakers can do so by creating holographic images with real flesh and blood. In our case, the soundstage was tangible, and the perfectly precise three-dimensional soundstage evoked a full-fledged magical realism—we truly were listening to some of the finest mass-produced speaker systems.
The perfectly effortless sound during graceful passages instantly gave way to a steely, velvet-gloved fist—dynamic bursts, both micro and macro, were exemplary and indistinguishable from a live performance by a large symphony orchestra. It was doubly pleasing that the timbral image was equally believable—and the beauty and grace of the overtones transformed listening into a continuous flow of endorphins.
Perhaps it's unnecessary to talk about the phenomenally deep and textured bass with incredible speed, or to sing the praises of the transparent midrange and detailed highs. The main thing is that, with their honesty, openness, and crystal-clear sound, the Magico M7 manages to captivate the listener and penetrate the very soul of the artist's emotional intent.
Bravo, the Magico M7 is one of the few loudspeaker models whose sound quality leaves no room for complaint. Our long and sustained applause.
