Nagra PREAMP II-S – a Stylish Tube Preamplifier

Nagra has released a new preamplifier, the Nagra PREAMP II-S, based on a vacuum tube stage. This model features the Nagra Modulometer, similar the iconic Nagra IV-S reel-to-reel tape recorder. It allows visual control of left and right channel levels, while emphasizing Nagra's signature style.

Building on the mechanical expertise developed for the Reference turntable and Reference electronics, the PREAMP II-S preamplifier features an advanced vibration damping system. A phenolic damping layer has been added under the aluminum top cover to ensure optimal control of mechanical resonance.

Input selection is accomplished using a precision rotary encoder, borrowed from the HD PHONO, with a knurled aluminum knob whose mechanical quality is immediately noticeable. In keeping with the original PL-P concept, the power supply has been removed from the chassis and is now external.

The Nagra PREAMP II-S preamplifier comes standard with a compact Nagra Compact PSU. The 12V DC input uses the traditional LEMO connector, a hallmark of Nagra professional products for decades.

In most systems, the Nagra PREAMP II-S will perform best with a gain setting of 0 dB, where it behaves almost like a passive preamplifier while maintaining an exceptionally low output impedance of 9 ohms. This ensures precise control over any power amplifier. If additional gain is needed, a +6 dB boost can be enabled using the front panel toggle switch. With a dynamic range of 125 dB, it delivers an exceptionally quiet background, allowing music to sound with maximum contrast and realism.
