Buchardt Audio E50-S – A More Sensitive Version of the E50

Danish company Buchardt Audio has released the E50-S passive bookshelf loudspeakers, developed on the basis of the popular E50 model introduced in 2024. The manufacturer stresses that the new model is not intended to replace the original version, but rather to offer a different sonic character and different amplification requirements. The Buchardt Audio E50-S features higher sensitivity, a less pronounced low-frequency response and a more prominent midrange, which is why both models will remain on sale.

The cabinet of the Buchardt Audio E50-S is slightly wider, allowing the use of a new 7.5-inch Satori mid/bass driver with a TeXtreme cone made by Swedish company Oxeon AB. The model also features a different tweeter and a newly developed crossover without resistors. The tweeter waveguide is machined directly into the 28 mm-thick solid-wood front baffle and has been designed specifically for the particular combination of tweeter, mid/bass driver and enclosure.

In terms of tuning, the Buchardt Audio E50-S differs noticeably from the E50. Despite the larger mid/bass driver, the bass is less prominent, while the midrange is pushed further forward. According to the manufacturer, this results in a more immediate vocal presentation, greater texture and a more precise soundstage, whereas the original E50 retains a softer and more relaxed sonic character.

The main practical difference of the new version is its higher sensitivity. Buchardt Audio says the E50-S can be used with amplifiers rated from just 15 watts, including low-powered tube designs, while the E50 is recommended for amplifiers delivering between 60 and 200 watts. Thanks to its more restrained bass response, the E50-S should also be better suited to smaller rooms and placement closer to walls. The speakers are manufactured in Denmark and carry a recommended retail price of €4,100 per pair in Europe.
