7. Technics SL-50C

Pros: Inexpensive and well-balanced all-in-one solution

Technics SL-50C supports playback speeds of 33, 45 and 78 rpm, which makes the device suitable for collections with rarer records. The price of the Technics SL-50C is not big - $899.99. Technics SL-50C is housed in an MDF cabinet and is equipped with a direct drive with a proprietary brushless direct-drive motor and aluminum cast platter with stiffening ribs. Technics SL-50C is ready to work "out of the box" - thanks to the factory-installed proprietary S-shaped tonearm made of aluminum and a decent Ortofon 2M Red cartridge with an elliptical needle sharpening. The built-in MM phono preamplifier is not forgotten either. The Technics SL-50C's sound is precise and harmonious; at this price, it's hard to find anything more interesting.

Michell Engineering Revolv

6. Michell Engineering Revolv

Pros – a synthesis of the company’s best ideas in a more affordable price segment

The Michell Revolv is based on a skeletal chassis concept and features a rigid design that provides direct mechanical grounding via an inert 19mm-thick aluminum plinth, machined from a single piece of aircraft-grade aluminum. This substantial structure, with excellent vibration damping properties, rests on bearings, each of which utilizes six Sorbothane damping points, further enhancing the anti-vibration properties. The tonearm mounting system is rigidly connected to the chassis, ensuring minimal coloration of the sound. The heart of the Michell Revolv is an inverted mono-helix bearing with a spiral lubrication channel, which continuously supplies oil and minimizes friction. The turntable's platter is made of Delrin and further reinforced with brass weights. This approach increases the moment of inertia and reduces wow and flutter.

Systemdek Revolution

5. Systemdek Revolution

Pros: A real mastodon of sound

Systemdek Revolution uses a state-of-the-art magnetic hydrostatic conical bearing, a system that eliminates mechanical contact in the platter bearing assembly using magnetic levitation and hydraulic damping. The decoupling of the turntable body from the surface is carried out through a three-point suspension with a loaded mass. Together with multi-layer damping of the design, this approach guarantees almost complete suppression of unwanted vibrations. The Systemdek Revolution vinyl turntable uses a Delrin platter and offers mechanical speed control for 33.3 and 45 rpm records. The device uses bases for tonearms from 9” to 10” in length as standard.

Thales Elegance

4. Thales Elegance

Pros: tight bass, excellent scale and panorama

Thales Elegance turntable, replacing the well-known TTT-Compact. The new turntable features an innovative platter drive system with a horizontal motor axis. The drive is designed based on the "endlessly free spinning platter" principle. This system was chosen deliberately – an eddy current brake delivers a high, speed-dependent braking torque directly to the platter. This ensures precise control of the drive motor using a simple current limiter. Furthermore, the horizontal motor axis eliminates vibrations transmitted to the platter. The Thales Elegance chassis is equipped with six powerful neodymium magnets, which, through the effect of eddy currents, significantly slow the rotational motion of the aluminum platter. This braking effect is many times greater than the dynamic tracking forces of the stylus, making their effect on the drive negligible. In this configuration, the belt is constantly tensioned in one direction, which compensates for uneven rotation. Unlike traditional control circuits, the motor speed in the Thales Elegance turntable is not continuously monitored or adjusted at short intervals. The average disc speed is determined once per rotation using an optical sensor. If the average speed is within a narrow tolerance, no correction is applied. If a deviation occurs, the current is adjusted. Of course, the company's beloved battery power is also included - the device now runs for 16 hours on a single charge. The Thales Elegance's sound demonstrates a mercurial character with full-fledged muscles and excellent resolution.

3. Linn Klimax LP12

Pros – classics never get old

The newest and most expensive version of the legendary Linn LP12 turntable is the Linn Klimax LP12. This upgrade to an already amazingly musical design features the signature Karousel bearing, Keel sub-chassis with the signature Linn Ekstatik cartridge, and Ekos Super Evolution tonearm. It sounds defiantly gorgeous and more than justifies every penny invested. This is a case where a modernized classic even surpasses modern innovations.

TechDAS Air Force IV

2. TechDAS Air Force IV

Pros: a flurry of detail and full 3D-sound

TechDAS Air Force IV turntable uses the company's favorite air bearing and is housed in a compact case and boasts a number of features that will warm the hearts of audiophiles. The massive platter, machined from A5056 aluminum alloy, provides an extended frequency range and noticeably improved dynamics. Like other TechDAS Air Force series turntables, the Air Force IV is equipped with an air bearing system that isolates the rotating 9 kg platter, ensuring an exceptionally low noise level. The top of the platter is covered with a special thin damping and anti-static pad that protects the records, and the tapered spindle absorbs record vibrations. The Wow & Flutter does not exceed 0.03%. The Air Force IV uses a 2-phase, 4-pole AC synchronous motor housed in a separate housing, effectively isolating vibrations and improving the signal-to-noise ratio. The TechDAS Air Force IV chassis, weighing 21.5 kg, is made of A5052 aluminum alloy and is mounted on four shock-absorbing supports, the design of which uses special damping materials used in the Air Force III Premium S model. The TechDAS Air Force IV supports the installation of up to three tonearms. The turntable's sound is at reference level; we couldn't find any complaints for this price range.

Soulution 787
Soulution 787. Image source - (c) Soulution

1. Soulution 787

Pros: Ultra High-End as it is

The model features linear tracking system with a moving platter and a minimal excursion pivoted tonearm.. Recall that such designs imply the highest tracking accuracy, but have hardly been used until now due to their extreme complexity and high cost (Nakamichi TX-1000 Computing Turntable in 1983-1987 with Absolute Centre Search System offered offered something a little similar - but in that case the tonearm moved, and the platter provided the necessary center shift, corresponding to a specific LP). As a result, the Soulution 787 vinyl turntable demonstrates a stunningly low tracking error of < 0.15 degrees! The model is equipped with an 8” pivoted tonearm, also compatible with high compliance cartridges. The tonearm is mounted on an isolated, resonance controlled sub-chassis. The design of the Soulution 787 eliminates the friction and unbalanced forces inherent with linear tracking tonearms where the arm is pulled toward the inner grooves by lateral forces on the outer edge of the record’s groove. As a result, the system offers all the advantages of pivoted tonearms, but without the traditional disadvantages, such as incorrect skating forces or tracking errors. The turntable's sound not only captivates with its scale, but also demonstrates full-fledged brilliance.
