The 7050C is a compact analogue subwoofer in Genelec's 7000 series and the newest version of the 7050. Genelec states that it delivers 3 dB more output than its predecessor. Its 5.1 input and output layout makes it a bass extension for small multichannel studio systems as well as for stereo pairs of compact monitors.

Key specs that matter

The 130 W Class D amplifier drives one 205 mm (8-inch) driver with magnetic shielding. The -6 dB response is 24 Hz to 85 Hz for the main channels and 24 Hz to 120 Hz for the LFE channel. Maximum output, averaged from 30 to 85 Hz, is 103 dB. At 90 dB, second harmonic distortion stays at or below 4% and third harmonic at or below 1%, and self-noise is 5 dB or less. A subsonic filter rolls off at 18 dB per octave below 24 Hz. The rear panel carries five XLR inputs and an XLR LFE input for 5.1, along with five XLR outputs, and a fixed 85 Hz crossover handles bass management for channels 1 to 5, while the LFE low-pass is at 120 Hz. A 6.3 mm TRS jack connects a remote switch for bypassing bass management. Consumption is 0.5 W or less in ISS standby, 11 W idle and 150 W at full output from 100 to 240 V. The cabinet measures 410 x 350 x 319 mm and weighs 17.3 kg.

Engineering and use context

Like the 7040A, the 7050C is built as an LSE, short for Laminar Spiral Enclosure, where a spiral strip doubles as cabinet wall and long reflex port, giving smooth airflow through the port at high levels. The port needs 7.5 cm of free space. An input sensitivity control covers +12 to -6 dBu, DIP switches provide Roll-Off of -4, -8 or -12 dB at 26 Hz and phase of -90, -180 or -270 degrees, an LFE switch adds +10 dB, and further switches set ISS and a low ISS sensitivity. Driver overload, thermal overload and short circuits trigger the protection system, and power-on muting prevents a thump when the unit starts. The bypass jack lets an engineer compare the monitors with and without the sub from the listening position.

Pairing

A multichannel audio interface or monitor controller connects to the five main XLR inputs, and the outputs feed up to five Genelec monitors with the lowest bass removed. The dedicated low-frequency channel of a 5.1 mix goes to the LFE socket. Setup relies on the rear controls, as the 7050C has neither GLM networking nor digital inputs.

Alternatives

The Genelec 7040A is the smaller analogue 7000 series model, with a 165 mm driver, 50 W amplifier and stereo XLR inputs and outputs.
