The 7040A is the smallest subwoofer in Genelec's analogue 7000 series. Genelec designed it as a companion for its compact 8010, 8020 and M030 monitors in stereo systems, where it extends the low end of small speakers in desktop systems, small studios, mobile production setups and homes.

Key specs that matter

A single 165 mm (6.5-inch) magnetically shielded cone driver is powered by a 50 W Class D amplifier. Response is 30 Hz to 90 Hz at -6 dB and 33 Hz to 85 Hz within ±3 dB. Maximum short-term sine output, averaged over 40 to 85 Hz in half space at 1 m, is 100 dB or more. Self-noise is 5 dB SPL or lower, and second harmonic distortion at 90 dB stays at or below 2.5%. Bass management uses a fixed 85 Hz crossover. There are two balanced XLR inputs, left and right at 10 kohms, and two XLR outputs that pass the signal above 85 Hz to the monitors at the same level as the input. Consumption is 5 W or less at idle, 70 W at full output and 0.5 W or less in ISS standby, which starts after 1 hour without signal. It runs on 100 to 240 V. The cabinet measures 410 x 350 x 205 mm and weighs 11.3 kg.

Engineering and use context

Its cabinet is a Laminar Spiral Enclosure, or LSE, in which one spiral-shaped strip forms both the wall and the reflex port, so air moves smoothly through the long port even at high output and port noise is kept low. The port opens on the side opposite the connector panel and needs 7.5 cm of clearance. A rotary sensitivity control covers +12 to -6 dBu, DIP switches give Bass Roll-Off of -2, -4 or -6 dB and phase in steps of 0, -90, -180 and -270 degrees, and a further switch disables ISS. Circuits protect against driver overload, overheating and short circuits. Unlike the SAM models, the 7040A has no network connection or digital input, and all adjustments are made on its rear panel. With its shallow depth, the 7040A is narrow enough to stand in a 19-inch rack, and it can be flush-mounted in a recess 7.5 cm wider than the enclosure. An optional carry bag is offered for mobile use.

Pairing

The two XLR inputs take the outputs of an audio interface or monitor controller, and the XLR outputs then feed a pair of small Genelec monitors with the lowest octaves filtered out. Sources with only RCA outputs need adapter cables.

Alternatives

The Genelec 7050C is the larger analogue 7000 series model, with a 205 mm driver, 130 W amplifier, 24 Hz lower limit and 5.1 inputs.
