The W371A is an adaptive woofer system from Genelec, launched on 5 September 2019 as a companion to the 8341A, 8351B and 8361A coaxial monitors of The Ones family. The monitor sits on top of the W371A, and together they form a full-range system in which the woofer takes over the bass and lower midrange and controls how that range radiates into the room.

Key specs that matter

The W371A combines a front 356 mm (14-inch) unit in a closed box at the top and a rear 305 mm (12-inch) unit in a bass reflex box below. They are powered by two 400 W Class D amplifiers. The -6 dB range is 23 Hz to 500 Hz and the ±3 dB range 25 Hz to 450 Hz. Short-term output is at least 117 dB from 30 to 100 Hz and 120 dB from 100 to 500 Hz, with peaks of at least 123 dB, and self-noise is 15 dB or less. The default crossover to the monitor lies between 150 and 250 Hz, can go up to 300 Hz and must be at least 50 Hz wide. Connections are one XLR analogue input and output with a maximum level of +25 dBu, one AES/EBU input and output, and two RJ45 ports for GLM, and there is no LFE input. Consumption is under 2 W in ISS standby, 40 W idle and 600 W at full output, from 100 to 240 V. The MDF cabinet measures 1108 x 400 x 400 mm and weighs 61 kg.

Engineering and use context

Using two drivers facing in opposite directions allows the W371A to shape the directivity of the bass, and GLM offers three modes, Complementary as the default, Directive and Null-steering. Because the crossover can sit this high, the monitor above is relieved of the lowest octaves and its woofers work over a narrower range. The closed upper box and ported lower box give each driver its own loading. Protection covers amplifier overload and overheating, indicated by a front light. Finishes are dark grey, black and white, and one GLM User Kit, the software and network hardware needed to set the system up, is included with every two units purchased.

Pairing

The W371A works only with the 8341A, 8351B and 8361A, which stand on its top panel and connect through the same analogue or AES/EBU signal chain and GLM network. The XLR and AES/EBU outputs feed the monitor above, which then covers the range above the crossover. Stereo systems use two units, and a Genelec SAM subwoofer can still be added for a separate LFE channel.

Alternatives

The Genelec 7370A is a conventional SAM subwoofer with a 305 mm driver and 400 W Class D amplifier, reaching 19 Hz at -6 dB.
