The 7380A is a SAM studio subwoofer from Finnish maker Genelec, built for music, post, film and broadcast rooms that need high output and deep bass from a cabinet smaller than its performance suggests. It suits both stereo and multichannel monitoring, and it follows the smaller 7370A in the SAM subwoofer range with a larger driver and more amplifier power.

Key specs that matter

A 381 mm cone woofer is driven by an 800 W Class D amplifier. The response extends from 16 Hz to 100 Hz at the -6 dB points. Measured in half-space at 1 m, peak output reaches at least 123 dB and short-term output at least 119 dB. Second harmonic distortion between 30 Hz and 85 Hz is 1 percent or lower, and self-noise is below 5 dB SPL A-weighted at 1 m. The enclosure is 685 mm high, 718 mm wide and 492 mm deep, with a weight of 69 kg. It consumes up to 40 W at idle, 600 W at full output and no more than 2 W in standby, and accepts mains from 100 V to 240 V.

Engineering and use context

Genelec's Laminar Spiral Enclosure gives the cabinet a curvilinear reflex tube that is wound inside the box. The shape keeps airflow laminar with little turbulence noise and allows a very long port to be packed into a small volume, which is how the maker gets extended low frequencies from a comparatively compact enclosure. The crossover is active and works on the signal before amplification, and driver protection circuitry guards the woofer against overload. Connections cover 7.1 channels of balanced XLR analogue in and out, an XLR analogue LFE input and output, a 110 ohm AES/EBU digital input and output, and two RJ45 CAT5 sockets for the GLM control network. Bass management filters low frequencies out of the main channels and routes them to one or more subwoofer feeds, using either analogue circuitry or software filtering, while the remaining signal continues to the monitors. Through GLM software every monitor and subwoofer in a system can be configured, calibrated and controlled from one place. Intelligent Signal Sensing switches the unit into standby when the input goes silent. Warranty covers parts and labour for two years, and registering the product extends this to five.

Pairing

The 7380A is designed for systems built from Genelec SAM monitors sharing one GLM network, in stereo or surround layouts. Its balanced outputs pass the high-passed channels on to the main speakers, so it can also be combined with other active monitors that take XLR inputs. Larger layouts can feed more than one subwoofer from the bass management.
