The MB8B belongs to the MB Series from Scansonic HD, the Danish loudspeaker label developed and manufactured in Denmark by Dantax Radio A/S alongside Raidho Acoustics. All of its drive units are in-house designs rather than off-the-shelf parts. European prices were announced at EUR 13,000 per pair in black satin or white satin and EUR 15,000 in walnut veneer.
Key specs that matter
Five drivers per enclosure form a three-way layout - one quasi-ribbon tweeter, two 5.25-inch carbon fibre midrange units and two 8-inch woofers with one-piece moulded woven carbon fibre cones. Crossover points are 400 Hz and 2800 Hz. Scansonic rates the response at 34 Hz to 20 kHz at -6 dB, with a nominal impedance of 4 ohm and a sensitivity of 88 dB. The bass reflex enclosure uses three ports. Dimensions are 355 mm wide, 1450 mm high and 490 mm deep including feet, and the weight is 45 kg per speaker. Recommended amplification is a minimum of 100 W.
Engineering and use context
The tweeter is built on Kapton foil with the voice coil integrated into the diaphragm itself, and Scansonic states that a conventional dome carries roughly 50 times more moving mass. Both carbon fibre cone types are chosen for stiffness at low weight, so the midrange and bass units resist flexing under drive. The crossover follows the same principles used in Raidho designs, and the cabinet is built to the rigid construction approach of that sister brand. Doubling both the midrange and the woofer units spreads the work across more cone area, which lowers the excursion each driver needs for a given level. Scansonic describes the model as particularly suited to large rooms and home cinema installations, where the three-port reflex enclosure and twin woofers can move large volumes of air. White is offered alongside black and walnut on this model, while the smaller Q Series towers come only in black or walnut.
Pairing
The low impedance and the power minimum point toward solid-state amplification with a stable low-impedance rating and good current delivery, whether a large integrated or a separate pre and power combination. Low-powered valve amplifiers fall outside the maker guidance. In a home cinema role the MB8B can take the front left and right channels, driven by the power stages of an AV receiver or a dedicated multichannel amplifier with enough output into low impedances.
Alternatives
The Scansonic HD MB6 B is a smaller floorstanding model from the same MB Series with the same quasi-ribbon tweeter technology.
