The L-12 is a slim three-way floor stander from the L-Series of Scansonic HD, whose owner DANTAX Radio A/S was founded in 1969, is based in Pandrup, Denmark, and also controls Raidho and Scan-Speak. Scansonic calls the L-12 the big brother of the series, and it shares the look and lines of the smaller models. In the current price list it sits at 12,499 DKK, above the L-9 Compact Floor Stander and just below the L-14 Floor Stander. The L-Series is the most affordable range of the brand, and its woofers use cones made of woven fibres, chosen to balance stiffness against internal damping.

Key specs that matter

Four 4.5 inch woofers are fitted, with one handling the midrange band while three take care of the low frequencies, together with a 25 mm silk dome tweeter. The crossover points are 1,000 Hz and 2,500 Hz. Rated response runs from 45 Hz to 20 kHz, with a sensitivity of 89 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohm. The cabinet is 132 mm wide, 1,085 mm tall and 310 mm deep, with a weight of 14.7 kg per unit. Black, white and walnut finishes are listed.

Engineering and use context

Scansonic states that the enclosure is 18 cm taller than that of the L-9 Compact Floor Stander, which uses three drivers, and the maker says the larger volume and added driver give the L-12 more solid bass than a cabinet this narrow would normally produce. The crossover points also differ from those of the smaller tower, which divides its band at 500 Hz and 3,500 Hz. The box is a ported bass-reflex design in MDF, with an additional 15 mm front baffle bonded on to reduce unwanted vibration and resonance. A magnetic grille in furniture-grade fabric covers the drivers, and aluminium feet and spikes come in the box. Five-way binding posts accept any common cable termination.

Pairing

Scansonic presents the L-12 for both stereo systems and home cinema. For a surround setup, the L-Series offers the L-6 Center Speaker, the L-8 Active Subwoofer and the wall-hung L On-Wall Multipurpose model for rear or side channels, along with the newer L10 Center Speaker and L12 SUB Active Subwoofer. For a two-channel system, an external stereo amplifier or AV receiver is needed to drive the pair, as it is a passive design without built-in amplification.
