The L-14 is a floorstanding speaker in the L series from Scansonic HD, a Danish brand born from the Dantax company of 1971 and closely linked to Raidho. The L series is Scansonic's accessible range, and the L-14 applies Raidho-derived design experience to a 2.5-way tower with two full-size mid/woofers and a soft dome tweeter.

Key specs that matter

It is a 2.5-way bass reflex design with a 25 mm silk soft dome tweeter and two 165 mm (6.5 in) paper sandwich mid/woofers. Crossover points are 1 kHz and 2.5 kHz, both second order. Frequency response is 38 Hz to 20 kHz, sensitivity is 90 dB into 8 ohms nominal and 4 ohms minimum, with 50 W to 200 W of amplification suggested. The cabinet measures 210 x 1000 x 295 mm in width, height and depth, and each tower weighs 19.6 kg.

Engineering and use context

In a 2.5-way design both mid/woofers reproduce bass, but only the upper one continues into the midrange up to the tweeter. The lower driver is rolled off at 1 kHz, which limits interference between the two drivers in the vertical plane while keeping the full cone area of both for low frequencies. The paper sandwich cone was chosen to give the right combination of stiffness and internal damping for a driver of this size. Second-order crossover slopes keep the network simple, with fewer components in the signal path and a gentler phase shift between drivers. The enclosure has increased wall thickness and heavy internal bracing to control cabinet resonance. Rear-firing ports extend bass output, so the tower should stand at least 30 cm clear of the rear wall. Magnetic fabric grilles are included, and the speaker is offered in black and walnut finishes. The tall, narrow cabinet keeps the tower visually light in a living room, while its internal volume supports both bass drivers. The L series also includes smaller models, so the L-14 can anchor a surround system with L-series stand-mounts behind.

Pairing

High sensitivity lets the L-14 reach high levels from modest power, although the dip in its impedance means the partnering amplifier should cope well with dips in load. Integrated amplifiers of 50 to 100 W per channel suit rooms of 20 to 30 m2. Bass extension is enough for most recordings, while home cinema systems can add a subwoofer for effects below that point.

Alternatives

Scansonic's L20 is the three-way tower of the same series with three 165 mm bass drivers for larger rooms.
