The L-9 Compact Floor Stander is, in the words of Scansonic HD, the smallest of the floor-standing models in its L-Series, the budget range of the Danish brand. Scansonic belongs to DANTAX Radio A/S of Pandrup, a company started in 1969 that later acquired Scan-Speak in 1977 and Raidho in 2009, and the maker says L-Series models draw on technology passed down from those higher-priced product lines. With a list price of 9,999 DKK, the L-9 is the entry point to the towers in the range, below the L-12 and the L-14, while the newer L20 Full Range Floor Stander carries no list price on the maker site. Besides these towers the series includes the L-5 and L-7 bookshelf models, center speakers, an on-wall speaker and active subwoofers, all in the same Scandinavian styling.

Key specs that matter

Three 4.5 inch drivers with woven-fibre cones are used, of which one handles the midrange and the remaining pair the low end, joined by a 25 mm silk dome for the treble. Its three-way filter divides the signal at 500 Hz and 3,500 Hz. Scansonic specifies 45 Hz to 20 kHz, 89 dB sensitivity and an 8 ohm nominal load. The cabinet is 132 mm across, 935 mm high and 310 mm from front to back, and weighs 12.3 kg. It comes in black, white or walnut.

Engineering and use context

The fibre material of the woofer cones was selected by Scansonic to combine stiffness with damping, and the soft dome tweeter is the same classic type used throughout the series. The MDF enclosure follows the L-Series layout with a reflex port on the rear panel, and a 15 mm layer is added on top of the front baffle to lower cabinet vibration and resonance. The maker states that the L-9 is intended for small to medium rooms and that it produces substantial bass despite the slim profile. Solid aluminium feet are fitted for stability, and aluminium spikes are supplied with the speaker. A fabric grille in furniture-grade cloth fixes magnetically, and the five-way terminals work with stripped cable, spade lugs or banana plugs. The next model up, the L-12, keeps the same width and depth but uses a taller enclosure with a fourth woofer and different crossover points.

Pairing

As a passive tower the L-9 needs an external stereo amplifier or an AV receiver. In a home cinema the L-Series supplies matching partners - the L-6 Center Speaker or the newer L10 center, the L-8 Active Subwoofer or L12 SUB, and the wall-mounted L On-Wall model for surround positions.

Alternatives

The Scansonic L-12 Floor Stander is the taller three-way tower from the same L-Series.
