The L20 Full Range Floor Stander is one of the newer additions to the L-Series of Scansonic HD, the most affordable range of the Danish loudspeaker maker, whose parent company is DANTAX Radio A/S, based in Pandrup. Founded in 1969, DANTAX bought Scan-Speak in 1977 and Raidho in 2009, and Scansonic says technology from those more costly lines is passed down to the L models. Where the slim L-9 and L-12 towers rely on 4.5 inch drivers, the L20 moves to much larger bass units while, in the words of Scansonic, keeping a compact footprint. It is listed on the Scansonic site without a price, next to the newer L10 Center Speaker and L12 SUB Active Subwoofer.
Key specs that matter
Five drivers sit in a passive three-way layout - a 1 inch (25 mm) silk dome tweeter, a 5.25 inch dedicated midrange and three 6.5 inch woofers. Scansonic quotes a frequency range of 35 Hz to 20 kHz, a sensitivity of 90 dB and a nominal impedance of 4 ohm. Power handling is 150 W nominal and 220 W maximum. Net dimensions are 210 mm wide, 283 mm deep and 1,090 mm high, with a net weight of 18.75 kg per speaker. Walnut and black finishes are listed.
Engineering and use context
Scansonic credits the trio of bass drivers with the ability to reach higher sound pressure levels in a home cinema or a stereo system, and a dedicated midrange driver handles the middle band on its own. Across the L-Series the brand uses a classic soft dome tweeter and woofer cones of woven fibres, a material chosen for a balance of stiffness and damping. The L20 cabinet is MDF, and a further 15 mm front baffle is added to damp vibration and panel resonance, a construction shared by the rest of the family. The look follows classic Scandinavian lines, and the grille is a magnetic fabric panel in furniture-grade cloth that matches the other L models. Spikes are packed with each speaker, and the five-way binding posts accept every common connector type.
Pairing
No amplification is built into the L20, so it has to be driven by a separate integrated amplifier, a power amplifier or a surround receiver. In a surround system it can be combined with the L10 Center Speaker, the L12 SUB or L-8 Active Subwoofer, plus the L On-Wall Multipurpose model hung on the wall behind the listener, all from the same series.
Alternatives
The Scansonic L-14 Floor Stander is another passive tower model offered within the same L-Series range.
