The MB6 B is a tall three-way floorstander in the MB-B series from Scansonic HD, whose engineering is tied to Raidho through their common Danish parent. It uses six small carbon fibre drivers arranged around a ribbon tweeter, a layout Scansonic calls a power-sharing line array, designed to combine the cone area of a large woofer with the speed of small drivers.
Key specs that matter
Drivers are one sealed ribbon tweeter and six 115 mm (4.5 in) woven carbon fibre cone drivers, two for the midrange and four for bass. Crossover points are 250 Hz and 2.6 kHz. Frequency response is 27 Hz to 40 kHz, sensitivity is 90 dB, nominal impedance is 4 ohms, and Scansonic recommends quality amplifiers of more than 50 W. The cabinet measures 178 x 1410 x 410 mm wide, tall and deep, with a weight of 35 kg.
Engineering and use context
The tweeter sits at the centre of a d'Appolito arrangement, with one midrange driver directly above and one below it. The four bass drivers are placed further out, in pairs at the top and bottom of the array, so the most directional drivers are at the centre, which helps the array behave like a single point source. Together the six drivers present more radiating area than a conventional 300 mm woofer. Each cone is woven carbon fibre with stiffening ridges and no dust cap, driven by an overhung motor built for long excursion. The ribbon-type tweeter, shared in concept with Raidho, uses a Kapton and aluminium sandwich diaphragm only 20 micrometres thick, weighing about 0.03 g. The midrange drivers and tweeter sit in their own internal sub-enclosure, isolated from the bass section. The cabinet is high-density MDF with structural elements in carbon fibre, and its tapered shape with sloping front and rear baffles reduces internal standing waves. The bass section is rear-ported, and aluminium outrigger feet are adjustable. Grilles are not supplied as standard but can be ordered.
Pairing
With a low impedance load the amplifier must deliver current comfortably, and 100 W or more per channel suits the medium to large rooms the MB6 B is designed for. Because the tower is sensitive, moderate amplifier power still reaches high listening levels. Finishes include satin black, satin white and walnut, the white version with a carbon fibre top insert.
Alternatives
Scansonic's MB8B is the larger floorstander with two 200 mm woofers and a braided carbon fibre midrange.
