The Børresen X6 sits at the top of the X-series, the entry range of Danish loudspeaker maker Børresen Acoustics, and it is the tallest floorstander in that line. The passive cabinet holds seven drivers - a planar ribbon tweeter, two 4.5-inch bass/midrange cones and four 4.5-inch bass cones - which doubles the woofer count of the X3. It was launched in June 2023 at EUR 20,000 or USD 22,000 per pair.
Key specs that matter
Response is rated from 30 Hz to 50 kHz, the lowest bass extension in the X-series. The nominal load is 6 ohm, and Børresen suggests driving it with more than 50 W. Sensitivity is quoted at 89 dB at 1 W. Each speaker is 164.1 cm tall, 37.8 cm wide and 56 cm deep, and it weighs 79 kg. The lacquered cabinet is sold in black or in white, both with carbon fibre inserts.
Engineering and use context
As with every X model, the design reuses ideas from the costlier M, 0 and Z families of Børresen, among them the ribbon, the spread tow membrane and copper-capped motors, at a lower price point. The two bass/midrange units use a membrane built from three skins laminated together, pairing two spread carbon fibre layers with aramid honeycomb spacers to keep stiffness high and resonance low. Their motor adopts twin copper caps fitted to its pole rings, a feature inherited from the Z-series to raise flux and lower inductance. The planar ribbon covers everything above roughly 2.5 kHz with a moving mass of just 0.01 g and an efficiency of 90 dB. Signal division is handled by a parallel crossover whose parts share the Z-series grade and are chosen for mechanical stability. The wood composite enclosure is heavily braced and stiffened with carbon fibre inserts, and it has several tuned bass reflex ports plus venting behind the tweeter for air pressure compensation. The ribbon itself is fully concealed within the front of the cabinet. Splitting the six cones into two groups lets the bass/midrange pair stay focused on the upper bass and midrange while the four lower units share the deepest notes.
Pairing
Its higher nominal impedance is easier on an amplifier than the lower load of the X2 and X3, so a wider range of solid-state amplifiers will cope with the X6, while four bass drivers per side still reward an amp whose current output holds up under load.
Alternatives
The Børresen X3 is the mid-size X-series floorstander, with two bass drivers and a 129 cm tall cabinet.
