The Børresen X3 is a passive tower in the X-series, the most affordable range of Denmark's Børresen Acoustics, and it is placed between the X2 and the X6. It is a four-driver 2.5-way design with one planar ribbon tweeter, one 4.5-inch bass/midrange cone and two 4.5-inch bass cones, so it has twice the dedicated bass cone count of the smaller X2. A pair was listed at EUR 10,000 in Europe and USD 12,500 in North America.
Key specs that matter
On paper the X3 offers a nominal response of 35 Hz to 50 kHz, 88 dB sensitivity at 1 W/1 m and a 4 ohm nominal impedance, and it recommends an amplifier of at least 50 W. The ribbon tweeter measures 70 x 28 mm and crosses over at 2.5 kHz. Each speaker is 129 cm high, 34.5 cm wide and 60.7 cm deep and weighs 55 kg. Its piano lacquer is available in white or black, set off by carbon fibre trim.
Engineering and use context
The X3 cones are a sandwich of three laminated skins - carbon fibre outer layers bonded to an aramid honeycomb core, where the spread tow carbon supplies stiffness and the honeycomb keeps mass low for that stiffness. Børresen describes the X-series as its entry line, built on design know-how from the brand's exclusive ranges. Copper caps in the magnetic motor are taken from the brand's costlier M, 0 and Z lines, and the tweeter uses less magnet and iron mass than in other Børresen ranges. Crossover components match the Z-series choice, picked to limit self-resonance. The cabinet is a heavily braced wood composite shaped without any parallel side walls, with carbon fibre reinforcement on the top and on the front baffle. Metal reflex ports are fitted - two behind the midrange unit, one relieving back pressure on the ribbon, and four low on the rear panel. Cabinets are produced in China, while drivers, crossovers and final assembly are done in Denmark. A single pair of binding posts takes spades, bananas and bare wire.
Pairing
The low impedance suits a solid-state amplifier that holds up into low impedance and has some current in reserve, and the single set of terminals means one amplifier channel per side with no bi-wire option. With four ports on the back panel, the X3 benefits from some clearance behind it.
Alternatives
The Børresen X6 is the taller X-series floorstander, using four bass drivers in a 164.1 cm cabinet rated to 30 Hz.
