The Børresen M6 is the tallest passive floorstanding speaker in the M-series from Denmark's Børresen Acoustics, and it scales the concept of the M3 up to six 4.5-inch iron-free cone drivers paired with one planar ribbon tweeter. The six drivers work as connected pairs, with one pair assigned to bass and midrange and the remaining four working as dedicated bass units. Each speaker measures 193.8 x 42.8 x 74.6 cm and weighs 86 kg. The M6 was first shown on static display during the May 2023 High End exhibition held in Munich, while its recommended price in Europe is EUR 540,000 per pair, with about USD 550,000 given for American customers.

Key specs that matter

Low-frequency extension is specified at 20 Hz, with the top end at 50 kHz, so the extra pair of bass drivers takes the low end 5 Hz deeper than the M3. Sensitivity is 89 dB at 1 W, nominal impedance is 6 ohm, and Børresen recommends amplification above 50 W. The ribbon tweeter itself has a moving mass of 0.01 g and a rated efficiency of 94 dB. Owners can order the cabinet finished in lacquered black or lacquered white.

Engineering and use context

The M6 drivers are built on zirconium baskets made by 3D printing to a topology-optimized shape, aiming for maximum rigidity and good damping. Their cones are a four-layer laminate made of carbon fibre woven by the spread tow method on both faces of an aramid honeycomb filler and a titanium layer finished in Ansuz Supreme coating. In the iron-free magnet system silver rings replace copper ones, and the maker gives inductance at around 12 times below a conventional iron-based driver. The enclosure is block-milled pressed wood with integrated bracing, and its walls are 5 mm thicker than on smaller models. A series-connected crossover uses military-spec parts and foil capacitors, and signals travel inside the cabinet on Ansuz Gold Signature wire. The iron-free magnet design is patented by Børresen, and the silver rings are cast and finished by hand in the company's own workshop. Acoustically the M6 is a 2.5-way layout, since the bass/midrange pair and the four bass units overlap in the low range while the ribbon handles the treble alone.

Pairing

The load is a little lower than that of the M3, so a transistor amplifier that stays stable and has good current reserves is the safer choice, though its sensitivity keeps the required power moderate.
