The Børresen M3 is a passive tower from Danish loudspeaker specialist Børresen Acoustics and the smaller of the two tall M-series designs, sitting below the M6. It uses four 4.5-inch iron-free M-series cone drivers and a planar ribbon tweeter, wired in pairs so that one pair covers bass and midrange and the other pair handles bass alone. Each cabinet stands 154 cm high, 42.8 cm wide and 72.6 cm deep and weighs 68 kg, and a North American pair was listed at USD 280,000 in January 2024.

Key specs that matter

Børresen rates the M3 from 25 Hz up to 50 kHz with 89 dB sensitivity at 1 W and a nominal 8 ohm load, and asks for more than 50 W of amplifier power. The ribbon tweeter carries a moving mass of only 0.01 g and its own efficiency is quoted at 94 dB. Speaker cables connect through banana plugs only, since the terminals do not accept spades. The cabinets are lacquered in either gloss black or gloss white finish.

Engineering and use context

Every M3 cone driver sits in a topology-optimized basket 3D-printed from zirconium, with its cavities packed with zirconium powder for extra damping. The diaphragm is a four-layer laminate - a pair of spread tow carbon skins wrapped around an aramid honeycomb centre, plus an outer titanium skin about 0.04 mm thick with Ansuz Supreme coating. The patented motor contains no iron, and in-house cast silver pole rings take the place of copper, which Børresen says brings inductance down to roughly one twelfth of a conventional iron-based driver. All metal parts go through a three-day cryogenic cycle near -196 degrees C, stated to raise conductivity by 6 to 8 percent. The crossover is a serial network with foil coils, military grade stacked film capacitors and precise strip resistors, and internal wiring throughout is Ansuz Gold Signature cable. An inner M Cabinet gives more ventilation behind the bass/midrange pair to limit compression, while the pure bass pair loads into an internal reflex section. A 14 V external DC supply is part of the package, and zirconium Darkz Z2 footers sit under the plinth.

Pairing

The benign load means the M3 does not demand a current-heavy amplifier, so a well-built solid-state or hybrid design of modest output can drive it. Any speaker cable chosen for it has to be terminated with banana plugs, so spade-fitted looms need re-terminating first.

Alternatives

The Børresen M6 is the taller M-series floorstander, using six iron-free drivers in a 193.8 cm cabinet rated down to 20 Hz.
