The 8350A is a Genelec SAM two-way monitor in the 8300 series, positioned above the 8340A in the SAM two-way line. It shares the cabinet size of the three-way coaxial 8351B and is used for nearfield work at longer distances, midfield monitoring and larger control rooms, with setup through the GLM software.

Key specs that matter

Its woofer is a 205 mm (8-inch) cone and the tweeter a 25 mm metal dome, both with magnetic shielding, driven by 200 W and 150 W Class D amplifiers. The manual places the crossover at 1.8 kHz. Genelec specifies a -6 dB range of 33 Hz to 22 kHz and accuracy of ±1.5 dB from 38 Hz to 20 kHz. Short-term SPL is 112 dB or more, long-term 103 dB, and peaks exceed 121 dB. The rear panel carries an analogue XLR input, AES/EBU input with a thru, and a pair of RJ45 ports for GLM. Power consumption is below 1 W in ISS mode, 12 W at idle and 230 W at full output, and the unit accepts 100 to 240 V. With the Iso-Pod it measures 452 x 286 x 278 mm, or 433 mm tall without it, and it weighs 12.8 kg.

Engineering and use context

GLM stores level, delay and filter settings inside each monitor after configuration from a computer, so the 8350A keeps its setup when disconnected from the network. When GLM is not used, rear DIP switches provide Bass Roll-Off, Desktop at 160 Hz, Bass Tilt, Treble Tilt, LED Disable, ISS, Digital, Level and a Stored setting that calls up the GLM configuration. The enclosure is die-cast aluminium shaped as a Minimum Diffraction Enclosure, whose curves keep diffraction from the edges low, and a Directivity Control Waveguide forms the area around the tweeter to keep dispersion even across the crossover region. A reflex port supports the woofer. The larger cone gives it a lower bass limit than the 8340A. The Iso-Pod can be mounted for vertical or horizontal use, and two M6 threads on the rear and an M10 thread in the base take stands and brackets. Dark grey, black and white versions are sold.

Pairing

Audio interfaces with balanced outputs use the XLR input, while AES/EBU from a digital console or converter can be chained to further monitors through the thru output. Its bass extension covers most music work, while a Genelec SAM subwoofer on GLM adds bass for film mixing.
