The 8340A is a two-way Smart Active Monitoring speaker from Genelec, introduced around 2016 as the successor to the 8240A and the SAM counterpart of the analogue 8040B. It offers the same cabinet size as the 8040B but adds a digital input, DSP-based driver protection and network control through the GLM software, and it is aimed at nearfield and midfield monitoring.

Key specs that matter

Two 150 W Class D amplifiers drive a 165 mm (6.5-inch) cone woofer and a 19 mm metal dome tweeter, and the crossover frequency is 2.6 kHz. The response runs from 38 Hz to 22 kHz at -6 dB and within ±1.5 dB from 45 Hz to 20 kHz. Output limits are 110 dB or more short-term, 100 dB long-term and 118 dB or more in peaks. The analogue XLR input handles up to +25 dBu, the AES/EBU input and thru accept 16 to 24 bit at 32 to 192 kHz, and two RJ45 ports connect to GLM. Power draw is under 1 W in ISS mode, 12 W idle and 180 W at full output. It is 350 mm tall, or 365 mm on the Iso-Pod, 237 mm wide and 223 mm deep, and weighs 8.4 kg.

Engineering and use context

With GLM, the response, level and delay of each 8340A are configured from a computer and stored in the monitor, and when no network is used, a stand-alone switch set on the rear covers Bass Roll-Off, Desktop at 160 Hz, Bass Tilt, Treble Tilt, ISS, Level and a Stored position that recalls GLM settings. More powerful amplifiers than the 90 W units of the 8040B raise short-term output by 5 dB. Its enclosure is cast aluminium without sharp edges, following Genelec's Minimum Diffraction design, and the tweeter waveguide gives controlled dispersion for consistent off-axis response. A long reflex tube with a flared rear exit extends bass output. The Iso-Pod stand isolates the monitor from the surface and tilts it. Two M6x10 threads accept König & Meyer mounts, and there is an M10x10 thread in the base. The paint choices are black, white and dark grey, with RAW as the uncoated option.

Pairing

Audio interfaces and mixers connect via analogue XLR, while digital consoles and converters can use AES/EBU and chain several monitors through the thru output. The bass extension and output reserve cover most nearfield music work without a sub, and a SAM subwoofer can be added in GLM for deeper bass.

Alternatives

The Genelec 8330A is the smaller SAM two-way model, using a 130 mm woofer with 50 W Class D amplifiers and a 45 Hz lower limit at -6 dB.
