The 4420A is a two-way Smart IP installation loudspeaker from Genelec, announced on 30 January 2020 for the ISE exhibition together with the larger 4430A. It belongs to the Finnish company's family of networked speakers that receive power, audio and control through one Ethernet cable, and it pairs that network connection with a conventional analogue input for mixed installations.
Key specs that matter
Genelec fits a 105 mm (4-inch) cone woofer and a 19 mm metal dome tweeter, with a separate 50 W Class D amplifier for each and a crossover at 2.9 kHz. Genelec specifies the response as 55 Hz to 39 kHz at -6 dB and ±1.5 dB from 62 Hz to 20 kHz. It produces a short-term maximum of no less than 100 dB, 94 dB long-term and more than 104 dB peak. Coverage is 120 degrees horizontally and 100 degrees vertically. Latency from analogue input to acoustic output is 2.2 to 2.3 ms. The RJ45 connection takes PoE+ or PoE power and AES67 or Dante audio at 32 to 96 kHz, and a 3-pin balanced Euroblock analogue input at 10 kohms accepts up to +24 dBu. Consumption is 4 W in ISS standby, 5 W idle and 25.5 W at full output. Its housing is 226 x 151 x 142 mm, with a weight of 3.1 kg.
Engineering and use context
Running power and audio on the same cable means a 4420A can be installed without a nearby mains outlet or a separate amplifier, which simplifies ceiling and wall installations. The analogue Euroblock allows the same speaker to be driven from a local line source, for example a paging microphone or a legacy mixer. Genelec's Smart IP Manager software sets up and monitors the speakers, with the same filter set, sensitivity, delay and zone profiles as the rest of the family, and the Smart IP Controller app and an API cover everyday control. The housing is a Minimum Diffraction Enclosure cast from recycled aluminium, with rounded shapes that reduce edge diffraction, and the waveguide around the tweeter, a Directivity Control design, keeps its dispersion under control. A reflex port assists bass output. The speaker has M6 mounting points and a 3/8-inch UNC thread.
Pairing
A PoE+ network switch with a Dante or AES67 source such as a networked mixer, DSP matrix or streamer is all the system needs, while the analogue input can take a balanced line output where no network audio is available. Finishes are black, white and 120 RAL colours.
Alternatives
The Genelec 4430A is the larger Smart IP model, with a 130 mm woofer and a lower limit of 45 Hz at -6 dB.
