Genelec's 4040A is a two-way active installation speaker, with documentation dating to July 2012. Genelec developed its 4000 series for fixed installations where a compact enclosure, simple wiring and a built-in amplifier are needed, and the 4040A covers larger spaces than the 4020 and 4030 models.

Key specs that matter

Each of its two drivers, a 165 mm (6.5-inch) cone woofer and a 19 mm metal dome tweeter, has a 120 W Class AB amplifier rated for short-term output, and their signal to noise ratio is 100 dB or better. The crossover frequency is 2.5 kHz. Response runs from 50 Hz to 25 kHz at -6 dB and within ±3 dB from 55 Hz to 20 kHz. Genelec quotes 109 dB or more short-term and 101 dB or more long-term. The input is a 5-pin Phoenix connector carrying balanced audio at 10 kohms together with a 12 V trigger, and input sensitivity is adjustable from +6 to -6 dBu. Power draw is below 0.5 W in standby, 15 W at idle and 170 W at full output. The mains voltage is set to 100, 120, 220 or 230 V depending on region. The cabinet measures 350 x 237 x 223 mm and weighs 9.9 kg.

Engineering and use context

Its Minimum Diffraction Enclosure is die-cast from aluminium and shaped with large radii so that sound from the drivers does not diffract from sharp edges. The Directivity Control Waveguide controls tweeter dispersion and blends it with the woofer near the crossover, which keeps the response even for off-axis listeners. A reflex port extends the bass. The switch panel includes Bass Roll-Off in steps of -2, -4 and -6 dB at 55 Hz, Bass Tilt from 0 to -6 dB at 100 Hz, Treble Tilt from +2 to -4 dB at 15 kHz, both tilts with a mute position, plus Autostart sensitivity of 0.4 or 1.4 mV, an Autostart off time of 1 hour or 15 minutes, and LED off. The trigger line on the Phoenix connector lets a control system switch the speaker on remotely. Two sets of M6x10 threads on the rear accept Omnimount Series 30 and König & Meyer brackets or a keyhole mount, and an M10x10 thread sits in the base.

Pairing

A balanced line source such as a mixer or matrix processor connects over installed cable, and the trigger line can come from the same control system. The larger woofer and output capability suit larger shops, bars and meeting rooms. Finishes are black, white, RAL colours and RAW.

Alternatives

The Genelec 4030C is the smaller 4000 series model, with a 130 mm woofer, 50 W Class D amplifiers and a 285 mm tall enclosure.
