The 1032C is a two-way active studio monitor from the Finnish maker Genelec and the third generation of the 1032, which first appeared as the 1032A in 1992 and was followed by the 1032B in 2013. Introduced in 2017, the C version keeps the drivers, acoustic design and soffit-mountable form of its predecessors and adds Genelec's Smart Active Monitoring platform with digital input and network control.
Key specs that matter
A 250 mm (10-inch) bass cone and a 25 mm (1-inch) metal dome tweeter, each with magnetic shielding, are driven by 250 W and 150 W Class D amplifiers, with amplifier distortion below 0.05%. The crossover sits at 1.8 kHz. Genelec gives the response as below 33 Hz to above 23 kHz at -6 dB and ±2.5 dB from 40 Hz to 20 kHz. The monitor produces 114 dB or more short-term, long-term output 104 dB, and a pair peaks at 124 dB. Inputs are an analogue balanced XLR at 10 kohms with a maximum level of +25 dBu, and an AES/EBU digital XLR accepting 16 to 24 bit at 32 to 192 kHz, plus an AES/EBU thru output that chains up to four monitors. Two RJ45 sockets connect to Genelec's own GLM network. Power draw is below 1 W in ISS standby, 11 W at idle and 200 W at full output. Dimensions are 495 x 320 x 290 mm and the weight is 17 kg.
Engineering and use context
Genelec builds the 1032C enclosure from MDF and fits a Directivity Control Waveguide, a shaped front around the tweeter that controls its dispersion so that sound radiated to the sides stays close to the on-axis response. Rear DIP switches include Bass Roll-Off, Bass Tilt below 800 Hz, Treble Tilt above 5 kHz, Desktop at 160 Hz, LED disable, ISS, selection of the digital channel, a -10 or -20 dB Level attenuator, and a Stored position that recalls settings made in GLM. Genelec's GLM software, used with the GLM kit or a 9320A controller, provides 16 notch filters and two low and two high shelving filters. ISS, Intelligent Signal Sensing, puts the monitor to sleep after a period without input. A front LED indicates amplifier overload or overheat protection. Mains input accepts 100 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz, and a 5 m GLM cable is supplied.
Pairing
Genelec recommends its 7300 series SAM subwoofers to extend the 1032C below its bass limit. The digital input lets a studio interface or AES/EBU source feed the monitor without an extra conversion stage, and the analogue XLR accepts balanced line outputs. Mounting options include a wall bracket, a stand plate and soffit installation.
Alternatives
The Genelec 8050B is a smaller two-way active monitor with a 205 mm woofer and a die-cast aluminium enclosure, weighing 14.4 kg.
