The 4020C is a compact two-way active loudspeaker in Genelec's 4000 series, the Finnish company's range for installed sound in shops, restaurants, offices, museums and homes. It replaced the 4020B, which was built from 2013 to 2017, and shares its acoustic basis with Genelec's studio monitors of the same size while swapping the XLR input for a Euroblock connector suited to fixed wiring.
Key specs that matter
The 4020C uses a 105 mm (4-inch) cone woofer and a 19 mm (3/4-inch) metal dome tweeter with shielded magnets, each powered by its own 50 W Class D amplifier. The crossover point is 3.0 kHz. Frequency response is 56 Hz to 25 kHz at -6 dB and ±2.5 dB between 62 Hz and 20 kHz. Short-term maximum output exceeds 100 dB, long-term output 93 dB, and a pair can peak above 107 dB. The balanced input is a 3-pin Euroblock at 10 kohms, and the level control covers a 40 dB range. Consumption is under 0.5 W in ISS standby, 3 W at idle and 60 W at full output from a 100 to 240 V supply. The enclosure measures 226 x 151 x 142 mm and weighs 3.1 kg.
Engineering and use context
Genelec casts the housing in aluminium as a Minimum Diffraction Enclosure, and its rounded edges and curved panels reduce the edge diffraction that a box with sharp corners would create. The tweeter is mounted in a Directivity Control Waveguide, which shapes its dispersion so that listeners away from the axis hear a response close to that on axis. A reflex port assists the woofer at low frequencies. Rear switches offer Treble Tilt of +2 dB above 4 kHz, a Bass Roll-Off of -4 dB at 65 Hz, a Bass Tilt from 0 to -6 dB in 2 dB steps, and an ISS switch that enables automatic standby when no signal is present. A driver protection circuit guards against overload. The base has a 3/8-inch UNC thread, the rear two M6x10 threads for Omnimount brackets, and a keyhole wall mount is supplied. Black and white are standard finishes, with 120 RAL colours available to order.
Pairing
As an installation speaker, the 4020C runs from a balanced line output, such as a mixer, matrix processor or preamplifier, over fixed cable into the Euroblock, so no external amplifier is required. It suits background and foreground audio in small spaces, and a Genelec sub can handle the lowest octaves.
Alternatives
The Genelec 4030C moves up a size within the 4000 series, with a 130 mm woofer, the same amplifier layout and a 47 Hz lower limit.
