The 8341A is a three-way coaxial studio monitor from Genelec, launched in 2017 as part of The Ones family alongside the smaller 8331A and the original 8351A of 2014. It is the middle size of the compact coaxial models, sitting above the 8331A and below the 8351B, and is intended for nearfield and midfield work where a monitor should behave as a single point source.
Key specs that matter
Treble comes from a 19 mm metal dome tweeter placed coaxially inside a 90 mm midrange cone, while two 170 x 90 mm oval bass cones sit behind the waveguide that covers the front. Class D amplifiers provide 250 W for the bass section and 150 W each for midrange and tweeter, rated short term. Crossovers are at 500 Hz and 3 kHz. The -6 dB range is 38 Hz to 37 kHz, and the response stays within ±1.5 dB from 45 Hz to 20 kHz. Short-term output reaches 110 dB or more, long-term output 101 dB, and a pair peaks at 118 dB. Connections are an analogue XLR, an AES/EBU XLR input and thru at 16 to 24 bit and 32 to 192 kHz, and two RJ45 ports for the GLM network. Consumption is below 0.5 W in ISS standby, 16 W idle and 250 W at full output from a 100 to 240 V supply. It measures 370 x 237 x 243 mm including the Iso-Pod, or 351 mm tall without it, and weighs 9.8 kg.
Engineering and use context
The oval woofers are hidden in slots around the coaxial unit, and the Acoustically Concealed Woofer arrangement makes them act as if they shared the axis of the midrange and tweeter. The Directivity Control Waveguide spans the entire front face, so dispersion stays controlled down into the bass rather than only around the tweeter. The housing is die-cast aluminium, shaped to Genelec's Minimum Diffraction principle, and the design is ported. Stand-alone DIP switches cover bass roll-off and tilt, treble tilt, a desktop low-frequency setting, the LED, ISS, digital input, level and Stored, which reloads a setup made in GLM. Protection covers driver overload, amplifier overload and overheating. The Iso-Pod stand can be fitted in one vertical and two horizontal positions, and the enclosure has two M6 rear threads and an M10 thread underneath. Colours are white, dark grey, black and unpainted RAW.
Pairing
Analogue interfaces connect over XLR, and digital consoles or converters can feed AES/EBU and pass it on through the thru socket. For deeper bass, a Genelec SAM subwoofer joins the same GLM network.
Alternatives
The Genelec 8351B is the next coaxial model up, with a 130 mm midrange, a 25 mm tweeter and two 218 x 101 mm woofers reaching 32 Hz.
