The 8331A is a compact three-way coaxial active monitor from Genelec, introduced in 2017 with the larger 8341A as part of the family the company calls The Ones. The design places all drivers on a common acoustic axis so that the monitor behaves as a point source, and it fits into roughly the same front area as the two-way 8030 and 8330 models.

Key specs that matter

A 19 mm metal dome tweeter is placed in the middle of a 90 mm midrange cone, and two 130 x 65 mm oval woofers flank the coaxial unit above and below. Amplification is Class D, rated 72 W for the woofers and 36 W apiece for the midrange and tweeter, with crossovers at 500 Hz and 3 kHz. Response is 45 Hz to 37 kHz at -6 dB and ±1.5 dB from 58 Hz to 20 kHz. Maximum SPL is 104 dB or more short-term, 99 dB long-term and peak output 110 dB, and self-noise is 0 dB(A) or lower. Inputs are an analogue XLR accepting up to +24 dBu, an AES/EBU digital input with thru at 32 to 192 kHz, and two RJ45 GLM network ports. Consumption is below 0.5 W in ISS standby, 4 W idle and 60 W at full output. The monitor stands 285 mm high, or 305 mm with its Iso-Pod, and is 189 mm wide and 212 mm deep, weighing 6.7 kg.

Engineering and use context

The racetrack woofers are positioned so that, acoustically, they behave as if coaxial with the midrange and tweeter, and the whole driver array radiates as one source across its range. The coaxial driver sits in a waveguide formed by the front of the die-cast aluminium enclosure, which also reduces diffraction through its rounded shape. The rear panel has a reflex port. Stand-alone switches include Bass Roll-Off, Desktop at 160 Hz, Bass Tilt below 800 Hz, Treble Tilt above 5 kHz, LED off, ISS, digital channel selection, a Level attenuator of -10, -20 or -30 dB, and Stored, which recalls settings from GLM. When connected to GLM, the monitor is configured and calibrated from a computer. Mounting uses two M6x10 threads for König & Meyer hardware and a 3/8-inch UNC thread in the base. Available colours are dark grey, white and black, alongside the raw metal RAW finish.

Pairing

Analogue interfaces and digital consoles with AES/EBU outputs both connect directly. A Genelec SAM subwoofer on the GLM network extends the bass, and the coaxial design suits close listening positions on a desk.
