The 8050B is a two-way model in Genelec's 8000 series of active studio monitors, aimed at nearfield work in bigger rooms and at longer listening distances. Genelec's manual names nearfield monitoring, mobile vans, broadcast and TV control rooms, surround systems and home studios as typical uses, and the rear panel is marked Made in Finland.
Key specs that matter
A 205 mm bass cone and a 25 mm metal dome tweeter, each with a magnetically shielded motor, run from separate Class AB amplifiers rated at 150 W for the woofer and 120 W for the tweeter. The active crossover is set at 1.8 kHz. Response is 38 Hz to 20 kHz within ±2 dB, and the -6 dB points lie at 32 Hz and 25 kHz. On axis the short-term sine output is at least 110 dB, and a pair can peak at 120 dB or more with programme material at 1 m. Harmonic distortion is quoted at 2 percent or less from 50 to 100 Hz and 0.5 percent or less above 100 Hz, and self-generated noise at 10 dB SPL A-weighted or lower. With its Iso-Pod the speaker is 452 mm high, 286 mm wide and 278 mm deep, and it weighs 14.4 kg.
Engineering and use context
The die-cast aluminium enclosure has softly curved edges in the Minimum Diffraction Enclosure style, uses polyester fibre damping inside and mounts the tweeter within a Directivity Control Waveguide. A long, flow-optimised reflex tube with a large cross-section ends in a wide flare at the back. The crossover is built from two parallel bandpass filters, and the amplifier unit at the rear includes thermal overload protection for the drivers. Input is a balanced XLR at 10 kOhm, and the screwdriver-set sensitivity control defaults to -6 dBu for 100 dB at 1 m. Intelligent Signal Sensing drops the speaker into standby below 0.5 W after playback ends, and an ISS DISABLE switch returns control to the power switch. Genelec calls for at least 5 cm of clearance behind, above and on both sides, and for ambient air near the amplifier to stay below 35 degrees Celsius. Two sets of M6x10 mm holes on the back accept Omnimount Series 60 and König and Meyer mounts, and an M10 thread in the base is not meant for microphone stands. The acoustic axis sits 290 mm above the base, and the Iso-Pod tilts the cabinet by up to 15 degrees. Full-output consumption is 170 W, and finishes are dark grey, white and black.
Pairing
A mixing console, interface or monitor controller with balanced outputs connects directly, and unbalanced leads work if pin 3 is grounded to pin 1 of the XLR.
Alternatives
The Genelec 8040B is the smaller two-way model in the same series, with a 165 mm woofer and 90 W Class AB amplifiers for each driver.
