The 8040B is a two-way active monitor from Genelec's 8000 series, sized above the 8030C and below the 8050B. It is an analogue model controlled by rear-panel switches, and Genelec uses it in the same sizes as its SAM counterpart, the 8340A, for nearfield and midfield monitoring in music, broadcast and post-production rooms, and for home listening.

Key specs that matter

A 165 mm (6.5-inch) cone woofer and a 19 mm metal dome tweeter are each fed by a 90 W Class AB amplifier. The crossover is at 3.0 kHz. Frequency response is 41 Hz to 25 kHz at -6 dB and ±2 dB from 48 Hz to 20 kHz. Short-term SPL is rated at 105 dB or higher and long-term SPL at 99 dB or higher, with peaks from a pair of 115 dB or more. Its balanced XLR input presents 10 kohms and has variable sensitivity with a maximum of -6 dBu. Power consumption is up to 0.5 W in ISS standby, up to 10 W at idle and 110 W at full output, with the mains setting 100, 120, 220 or 230 V by region. The monitor stands 350 mm high, or 365 mm on its Iso-Pod, and is 237 mm wide and 223 mm deep.

Engineering and use context

Genelec's Minimum Diffraction Enclosure for the 8040B is cast aluminium, and its rounded front and sides reduce diffraction from the edges and give the drivers a stiff housing. A Directivity Control Waveguide shapes the tweeter output, so the off-axis curve tracks the frontal one. Both drivers have magnetic shielding, and a protection circuit limits long-term output. At the back, a long reflex tube ends in a wide flare to keep air noise low. The Iso-Pod stand decouples the monitor from the desk and tilts it toward the listener. Rear switches cover Bass Roll-Off in -2, -4 and -6 dB steps, Bass Tilt below 800 Hz in the same steps, Treble Tilt above 5 kHz at +2, -2 or -4 dB, and Desktop LF at -4 dB around 160 Hz. ISS switches the speaker to standby when no audio is present. Mounting uses two M6x10 threads on the rear for Omnimount Series 30 and König & Meyer hardware, and an M10x10 thread in the base.

Pairing

The balanced XLR input takes an audio interface, mixer or preamplifier. Its woofer size and low bass limit leave a subwoofer optional for most nearfield setups.

Alternatives

The Genelec 8340A is the SAM equivalent of the same size, with 150 W Class D amplifiers per driver, a digital input and GLM network control.
