The 8030C is a small two-way active studio monitor in Genelec's 8000 series and the successor to the 8030B. It keeps the analogue signal path and switch controls of the classic 8000 range, while the amplifiers moved from the Class AB design of the 8030B at 40 W per driver to Class D with more power per driver. It is used for nearfield work in studios, broadcast and mobile production as well as in home systems.
Key specs that matter
The 8030C combines a 130 mm (5-inch) cone woofer with a 19 mm (3/4-inch) metal dome tweeter, each on its own 50 W Class D amplifier, crossed over at 3.0 kHz. Response is below 47 Hz to above 25 kHz at -6 dB and within ±2.0 dB from 54 Hz to 20 kHz. Short-term output is 104 dB or more, long-term output 96 dB or more, and a pair peaks at 110 dB or more. Distortion is under 2% between 50 and 100 Hz and under 0.5% above 100 Hz, and self-noise is below 5 dB(A). The single input is a balanced XLR at 10 kohms, with a sensitivity of -6 dBu for 100 dB SPL and adjustable by up to 12 dB. Power draw is below 0.5 W in ISS mode, 3 W idle and 60 W at full output from 100 to 240 V. The monitor is 285 mm high, or 299 mm on its Iso-Pod, 189 mm wide and 178 mm deep, and weighs 5.0 kg.
Engineering and use context
The drivers are housed in cast aluminium, in Genelec's Minimum Diffraction Enclosure form, rounded to cut edge diffraction, and the Directivity Control Waveguide in front of the tweeter controls dispersion for even off-axis response. The reflex port is a long flow-optimised tube with a wide flare at the rear. The Iso-Pod, short for Isolation Positioner/Decoupler, is a rubber stand that decouples the monitor from the surface below and can tilt it. Switches offer Desktop (-4 dB at 160 Hz), Treble Tilt (0 to -2 dB), Bass Roll-Off (-4 dB at 55 Hz) and Bass Tilt (-2, -4 or -6 dB). ISS, Intelligent Signal Sensing, puts the speaker in standby when no signal arrives. The base has a 3/8-inch UNC thread for microphone stands, and two M6x10 threads on the back accept Omnimount brackets. Genelec offers it in dark grey, black or white paint, or as bare RAW aluminium. Protection circuitry limits long-term output to keep the drivers safe.
Pairing
The 8030C takes balanced line signals from an audio interface, mixer or preamplifier. A Genelec subwoofer extends the bass for music production.
Alternatives
The Genelec 8330A is the SAM version of the same size, adding a digital AES/EBU input and GLM network control in the same cabinet size.
